Tylenol/Motrin combo
Could someone explain the Tylenol/Motrin combo to bring down a fever. DD has had a fever since last night and we have given her motrin but I know when can give her tylenol too to help bring it down, I just don't know the timing, etc.
She is almost 2 1/2 and we gave her Motrin around 7am this morning but I feel her fever is spiking back up and I don't want to wait until 1 to give her the next dose of motrin.
TIA!!

Re: Tylenol/Motrin combo
I've always alternated every 2-3 hours - but that's only when the fever was really bad (103 and higher) that might be just me though. I also typically don't give anything until the fever is 101 or more.
Tylenol is Acetaminophen while Mortin is ibuprofen that's why they are allowed to be alternated like that.
Hope she feels better soon !!

Re: Tylenol/Motrin combo
you can give motrin every 6 hours and tylenol every 4...
for ex. motrin at 12 tylenol at 3 motrin at 6 tylenol at 7
and so forth.
I usually start with the motrin since it seems to break the fever better. and then anytime between the next dose of motrin you can give the tylenol. as long as the motrin is 6 hrs apart and tylenol 4 your good no matter how you space it out.

same here. I only do the combo if one by itself doesnt break the fever. My Dr said never to give them back to back either. Wait at least an hour. (But as long as you are keeping with the motrin ev 6 hrsm tylenol every 3. )

Be careful! Alternating these improperly can cause real damage to liver and kidneys.
"there is presently no scientific evidence that this combination is safe or achieves faster fever relief than using one of the products alone."

i have heard this too. I only do the combo if 1 alone does not bring the fever down. The other day Katie had a 104.8 fever, I gave her motrin and an hour later is went down to 102 but she was still uncomfortable so I gave her the tylenol and it broke it.

Re: Tylenol/Motrin combo
I alternate but my DS gets high fevers, up to 106.
I only alternate if it is over 103, maybe 102.5 a couple after the intial dose of motrin.
It is safe to alternate every 4 hours, but be careful you are alternating properly b/c you could double dose with the wrong medicine.
