I have a job! (and a few questions)

So my supervisor called me yesterday and they offered me a position as a contractor for non-public schools. Basically, I would make my own schedule and go to different non-public schools to provide special ed. services. I would get paid by the session with no paid sick, holiday or benefits (but the pay per session is really decent). I'd much rather have my own classroom, but I'm really grateful to have something.

Now here are my questions:

1. This job would consist of doing resource room, which I have nenver done. Are there any resource room teachers that can give me an idea has to what you do?

2. I have to write a request for proposal for spec. ed sservices. ANyone ever write one of these?

Thank you in advance!

I can't answer your questions, but CONGRATS!

Try googling what you need. I have done that for reports, etc to get a guideline.

Re: I have a job! (and a few questions)

As far as Resource room goes, I would speak to the child's regular ed teacher and see if you could work together with them for each child. Much of the time the classroom teachers send the kids to resource room with the work they didn't finish.

When you don't get that you can find out when they are having tests (depending on what grade level they are in) and prep them for it by helping them create index cards for studying. Study skills are a big topic you can work on. You can also work on skills that they may be deficient in to help the classroom teacher prep them for the state tests. I teach fifth grade and did Resource room for fifth and sixth grade last year so I pretty much know what most kids are deficient in (mult tables, inferencing, conventions of writing, study skills, etc).

I hope this helps. If you need any more info let me know.

Thank you! I was assuming it would alot of test prep / study skills. I'm certified 5-12 so I know I'll have Middle/HS students.

Re: I have a job! (and a few questions)

I provided Resource Room services for 2 years in my district before going back to a self-contained class. I worked off my student's IEP's, so I would assume you would do the same. I created lessons around their goals...particularly in Reading and in Math.

Re: I have a job! (and a few questions)

I teacch in a middle/high school and have taught Resource room. I think the biggest thing to do in all these classes, regardless of age, is to teach organizational strategies and study skills. These are huge deficits that kids need. However, I would also maintain constant contact with their gened teachers to see how students are doing. If possible, I would email them once a week or so for an update on how the students are doing - if there is any work missing/can be made up/ and any upcoming tests, assignments, or projects - that way atleast you can structure your period somewhat!

For resource it is collaborating with the classroom teachers on projects/things they need help with and doing testing for kids with extended time. Don't know about the proposal. I just wanted to mention that as a contractor you can deduct related materials/car maintenance/mileage etc from your taxes which can also be a big help!

Yes- someone mentioned that to me, which sounds good. Unfortunatly, they wont be taking taxes out so between all that we'll probably end up having to get an accountant.

Yes you will. Make sure you keep receipts for everything. They can set up a quarterly tax payment for you so you don't have to send so much all at once.
