Need help planning 1st bday menu - suggestions?
DS' 1st bday in October will be here at home, outside with a tent. But, I need help with the menu. It will be catered.
I'm thinking casual since bday party will be at 1PM. But no too casual.
I'd like to have a variety of hot and cold foods that will satisfy most people. I'd like to stay away from having it be mostly Italian food, I want something different.
Suggestions?
So far all i've got is maybe have a hero or two and that we'll have cupcakes from cupcakes catering as his "cake."
Thanks!
ETA: Our theme is Safari if anyone has safari-themed food ideas.
So far I like the idea of having some heroes, salads, wings, maybe fried shrimp?
What else? What would you love for there to be at a party that you would gobble up?

Do you have a theme that the food can tie in with?
We are having a barnyard party so we are having fried chicken, ribs, etc

For DS #1's first birthday we did BBQ...pulled pork, ribs, mac & cheese, corn bread, etc.
For DS #2's first birthday this weekend we are doing heroes and salads, mac & cheese, hot wings and swedish meatballs.

We have a safari theme so I'm not sure i don't know how to tie in the theme but if you anyone has ideas, I'd love them.
I like the idea of heroes and salads, and want to add other hot food in too. I like the hot wings idea. I was also thinking maybe fried shrimp. Things people will like that won't be too messy (i really wanted BBQ like ribs and pulled pork which i love but think my guests maybe picky complainers)

Found these ideas online by searching for safari party food.
Safari Birthday Party Food Ideas:
*Lion Pizza *Zebra Lasagna *Peanut Butter & Banana Sandwiches *Ostrich Eggs (scrambled eggs) *Pigs in Blankets (hotdogs)
*Jungle on a Log: Cut celery in about 5" lengths and fill with almond butter. Put some raisins (ants) on top. Kids can stick animal crackers in almond butter (so crackers stand up).
*Monkey Banana Splits: Have children make their own banana splits (or help them out if they are too young). Place 1 banana for each child on a plate. Next, put containers of several ice cream flavors on the table - so the kids can pick and choose. Have whipped cream, sprinkles/jimmies, cherries, various sauces (butterscotch, marshmallow, chocolate, etc.)
*Unshelled Peanuts *Gummy Worms *Animal Crackers
Safari Birthday Party Drink Ideas:
*Frosty Root Bear Floats: Fill your jungle party cups half full with root bear. Add 1 scoop of vanilla ice cream. Carefully add more root bear and serve.
*Zany Zebra Shakes: Combine the following ingredients in blender - 6 cups milk, 12 Oreo® cookies (crushed beforehand) and 2-3 scoops of vanilla ice cream. (You may want to split the ingredients in half so it won't overflow). Blend until smooth.
*Jungle Juice (fruit punch)
