So upset! (insurance/hospital related)
I really wanted to deliver at Stony Brook this time. I found a new doctor that delivers there, and really like him. Now the billing office just called me and said that Stony Brook Hospital doesn't take my insurance!! How is that possible? How can a hospital not take insurance? This is the closest hospital to my house - if I ever had an emergency, this is where an ambulance would go. I don't get it.
She said she was going to call the hospital and ask if I can get an out-of-network referral, but I have no idea what that means. We certainly cannot afford to pay for a delivery that is not covered. We have Oxford Liberty, its the worst insurance ever.

wow really the hospital doesnt take your insurance- I dont know why but I find that hard to believe
I can see an individual doctor not accepting it- but a whole hospital? I would definitely call the insurance company directly and talk to someone there and see what the deal is... oxford is not a fly by night insurance so I dont get it

I know with my insurance, if you don't have a choice in doctors (and I would assume hospitals, which would be your situation if there was an emergency) they use the out of network rates.

Re: So upset! (insurance/hospital related)
So I just called the insurance company and they said that the hospital IS a participating facility but that certain departments in the hospital might not be. I'm so confused. I tried calling back the woman at the dr. office, but she already left for the day, so I have to wait till next week to figure this out.
Ugh, I don't want to search for a new dr. AGAIN.

Crashing ... but I work in a hospital and we only started accepting Oxford last year. It is quite possible for hospitals not to accept other insurances as well.
It ain't right ... but it happens.

Re: So upset! (insurance/hospital related)
yeah it happens, they switched us to oxford in march, when I was mid-pregnancy and I had to find another ob-gyn... a friend referred me to her doctor and the doctor took my insurance but as it turned out she delivered at beth israel and my insurance didn't cover stays at that hospital....

Re: So upset! (insurance/hospital related)
Thanks everyone. I called SB and they do not accept my insurance. They take Oxford Freedom, but not Liberty.
This is so disappointing for me, but what can I do?
I just made an appointment with the OB that delivered my DC. At least I know them and trust them - and the hospital takes my ins.

Re: So upset! (insurance/hospital related)
This happened to me. I was supposed to deliver at S.B. and had Aetna insurance and they stopped accepting Aetna so I had to switch DRs, but I'm glad I did, I love my new dr. so much more. I'm delivering at St. Charles now.

Re: So upset! (insurance/hospital related)
We have been through hell with my horrible insurance. Stony Brook does not take it either. All hospital ERs have to take your insurance but unless it's an unforeseen event then they can say no. I had to pick a Dr. from my insurance book but I ended up really liking her & he delivers at St. Charles & I love St.Charles!

Re: So upset! (insurance/hospital related)
There are negotiations with hospitals and insurance companies constantly...
Recently, insurance companies have been trying to cut the compensation that hospitals get for taking care of patients.
Hospitals negotiate by not taking the insurance & then hope the insurance company will come back with a higher offer. If not, they drop the company.
Sometimes, certain departments in the hospital that are privately- billed (anesthesiology, radiology) do not accept an insurance plan.
If you just want to pay co-pays, you need to find a new place to deliver at.
Otherwise, ask your insurance company how much you would be responsible for for an out of network provider. This can easily be a few thousand dollars, but if you LOVE your Dr, it may be worth it.

Re: So upset! (insurance/hospital related)
We are going thru a similar experience with Stony Brook and Oxford Liberty.
My daughter's metabolic/genetic specialist (since she was born) is listed as a Liberty accepting provider. Yet her billing dept says they do not accept Liberty. Not many such very rare metabolic disorder providers in Suffolk.
Likewise as your problem with Stony Brook, they are not accepting Liberty at all.
Oxford Liberty is a cheap ins plan, most likely they will not pay as much as Freedom plan to the docs and hospitals.
