Huntington Hospital - Is it a good hospital?
I live in East Nassau and work on 110. I used to work closer to winthrop so it made sense to deliver there my last pregnancy. But now my doc is in Garden City and I'm wondering if it makes sense to switch to a suffolk OB and deliver at Huntington Hospital instead.
Any feedback about it?

I'm delivering there. It is really wonderful; my cousin had both her kids there and everyone i talk to raves about the maternity ward. I've been there (unfortunately) for a d&c and have also had a few prenatal tests there. no complaints.

Re: Huntington Hospital - Is it a good hospital?
I delivered there. I wasn't really happy with the nursing staff. I feel like they weren't really supportive with BFing. They were really forcing Formula on me. The ped on call was really pushy too.
After 30+ hours of natural labor they decided to do a c-section. While I was waiting for the Anesthesiologist to come give me the epidural we realized they "forgot" to turn off my pitocin. It took them a half hour to remember.
I had to wait 4 hours for a room after delivery and they wouldn't allow the baby in recovery with me.
I won't be delivering my next there. I just felt like overall they weren't as attentive as I would have liked. I also felt their bedside manner stunk.
Sorry for being brutally honest.

Re: Huntington Hospital - Is it a good hospital?
I can tell you that I live 5 mins from Huntington Hospital and decided to pick an OB that was affiliated with Winthrop instead. I also work closer to Winthrop, but my main concern was I wanted to deliver at Winthrop regardless.
I hear mixed reviews about Huntington Hospital, nothing really "wrong with it", but I did not get feedback that it was an amazing experience either.

I'm planning to deliver there (I could even walk there if I had to--I live so close). All of my friends and family members that delivered there had good experiences. I'm hoping it's the same for me.

No apology needed - Thank you for your honesty. While i had not a perfect experience during labor at Winthrop - (My epidural ran out and it took them a while to even notice that I was pressing the call button in the middle of the night. ), my time in the maternity ward was great- I was able to be with DD in recovery and the nurses were very attentive and helpful! Guess I will just deal with figuring out how to get to my doc appointments.

I delivered at Huntington and had a wonderful experience. I thought the nursing staff was great in both L&D and maternity. I felt that they were really supportive of BFing and offered help whenever I asked.
I hope to deliver all my children at Huntington.

I just delivered there in May and I had a VERY good experience, I would highly recommend them. I couldn't stop thinking about how wonderful the staff was, especially 2 L&D nurses, Jeannie and Debbie!! Those 2 nurses were instrumental in helping me mentally get through it One of them even came to visit me in maternity the next day to see how I was doing and to chat for awhile. HTH and congratulations and good luck!!
ETA: I had an LC come to my room numerous times to make sure BFing was going well and was given a ton of contact #'s/info related to it. Also no mention of formula, I am still successfully BFing.

Re: Huntington Hospital - Is it a good hospital?
In doing my research, it seemed that huntington was rated higher than Winthrop and seemed more flexible. It is also most convenient for DH's family members (while we can't walk there easily, we do live pretty close). And really, the dr. I chose is worth whatever happens in the delivery room *no jinx*

Re: Huntington Hospital - Is it a good hospital?
I delivered there last summer and will be delivering there with my 2nd later this year. ( I now live in Nassau but refuse to deliver anywhere else!!) I had an amazing experience there. I ended up with an unplanned c-section so I was in the hospital longer than expected. The nursing staff took incredible care of me and I didn't have one complaint when I left. All of the nurses in the nursery were so nice and they took great care of my dd. Anyone I know that has delivered there also had an amazing experience.

Re: Huntington Hospital - Is it a good hospital?
My sister delivered both her kids there and she has good things to say. she always mentioned the L&D nurses being real cheerleaders.
I delivered at NS Plainview - is that an option for you? I loved the maternity ward and I saw that it was listed as one of the top maternity wards in the area from another post.

Re: Huntington Hospital - Is it a good hospital?
I delivered there a month ago and was happy with it.
I had a great L&D nurse (Lynn). Very nice and supportive. When I forgot the basics of lamaze breathing b/c the contractions were kicking my ***, she refocused me on relaxing, breathing and using my focal point. She also got the anethesioloigst quickly once it really started to hurt. Epidural was perfect. No pain, but I could still feel pressure pushing down on my cervix which helped when it was time to push - and Lynn was great at coaching my through it.
For my two days in recovery, I thought the nursing and nursery staff were great. The hormone change after delivery hit me hard - and it seemed every little thing had me in tears for about a week afterwards. The staff were super supportive and concerned for me while I was there.
My only complaint has nothing to do with the people that work there. The showers in the recovery are in the hall, the food isn't great and it would be nice if all the rooms were private.
But, if I got pregnant tomorrow - I would plan on delivering at Huntington again and look forward to it.

Re: Huntington Hospital - Is it a good hospital?
I delivered there and it was mixed for me.. I feel bad saying anything bad because MOST of the nurses/staff were GREAT!!!
However, my first night was a complete disaster. I won't get into details on here (you can fm me), but I will say that the nursing staff was less than responsive to me and I am not a pushy/demanding person at all (maybe I should have been)
For me though it comes down to the Dr.'s. If I were indifferent about my Dr then I may consider switching to a Dr. who delivers somewhere else. But as of now, I feel comfortable and have confidence in my Dr. and wouldn't want to switch on the chance that I will have a better experience elsewhere (I feel everywhere you will here mixed things)
I do have to say that what I Loved about HH was that (at least when I was there) it was not crowded at all. Pretty much most people did not have to share a room.
My least favorite thing was that there are communal showers outside of the rooms where everyone showers
Having a C section I did opt for a private room for 2 of the 4 nights just to have my own shower.
Good luck!

Re: Huntington Hospital - Is it a good hospital?
I delivered both of my dd's there and I had a great experience.
MY only complaint was after I delivered the baby, I felt left alone, meaning, everyone leaves w/the baby and forgets about the mom. Both times I felt extremely nausceous and ultimately ended up getting sick and I was panicking because no one was there to help me.
Other than that, the doctors, nurses, were very supporting especially during delivery. The nurses in the maternity ward are fabulous. When I had my first DD, I was clueless, nervous mom and my dd wasn't taking to the bottle so well They gave me lessons and helped settle my nerves.
All of my siblings delivered our children there. I live in Kings Park and traveled there rather than St. Catherine's which is in walking distance of my home.
