A Small Financial Victory - NJ EI related.

EI is not free in NJ. They have a "cost share" program where you pay based on your income. Our monthly maximum was $600/month. Since we required a lot of services we always hit that max so that is what we paid for EI.

Well, our governor passed a law in February that any children with autism will be eligible for up to $36k per year payable by their insurance company, including the EI cost shares.

I finally got word today that our claims went through. So the $600 from March to July (when he turned 3) is getting reimbursed. $3,000!!!

we absolutely shouldn't but I always told myself it is the best $600 I spend in a month.

I just feel bad for some families who might decline services because the price is too steep for them.

Yes, it is based on income BUT living in NJ (just like LI) is not cheap. Plus since we both work (making our income higher) we have to pay for daycare as well. So between daycare and EI we were paying close to $1,700 per month between both. Chat Icon

What a great progress!

The average amount of money spent by parents of parents with autistic children is $30K to $70K per year. National average!

It's insane!

In some States parents must take loans. Foreclose on their house to pay for those services.

my cousin lives in VA and they have to pay out pocket... she said she has averaged about $45K a year so far since her son got his diagnosis.

he was 2.5 and he is 7 now

I hope that never goes through! While it is great now to have the covereage under your private insurance remember that this only applies if you have a diagnosis on the autism spectrum. So any other child who has just a speech delay, sensory processing disorder, etc is not covered. So they still have these enormous co-pays!
