Our newest just got spayed.....

I just got a call from the Vet saying that Reagan is awake and did very well with her surgery. I'm so sad though that she has to stay over. Why?? I mean, she just got out of surgery and she is awake -- and it's just 11:30am. The office closes at 7pm. I can't get her before? Chat Icon Why not?!

I was SO sad dropping her off Chat Icon

Aw, I'm sorry she has to stay overnight. Even though it's tough, I always think it is better. Spaying, while routine, is fairly major surgery. She'll be getting pain meds, being monitored, and will be kept confined so she can't move too much, which helps the incision heal. Chat Icon

I'm sure she'll be thrilled to see you tomorrow.

I feel your pain, though. One of my cats has been in the hospital since Saturday.

We chose to p/u our kitten the same day and in hindsight, although we missed her terribly, we probably should have left her at the vet. She was so drugged up and she kept falling down and still wanted to play like usual. It was breaking my heart to see her like that (and hear her cries when we put her in the carrier to keep her confined).

Re: Our newest just got spayed.....

Many years ago when my boy was neutered I signed a waiver to not have him stay overnight. I found out that no one is there all night long anyway (at least at my vet at the time) so what's the point? We kept him quiet, he was kind of groggy anyway and at least I was there to watch him if a stitch popped or something. I

Spaying is a significantly more invasive procedure than neutering, though. Vets are more likely to let a male go home after neutering than to let a female go home after spaying. I would want my female dog to stay (as difficult as it is to be away from them), especially if I had another dog at home. Severasl reasons -- they can be monitored more closely after surgery, they can be administered pain medication, and they are kept less active, which helps the incision heal. Also, the vet can monitor and check the incision site.

While most vet hospitals don't have vets there 24/7, most should have techs checking on the animals overnight and vets on call.

I completely agree that it is more invasive and needs to be monitored more closely. I would definitely ask though if there is someone there all night just to be certain.

Re: Our newest just got spayed.....

Reagan came home the other day and is doing very well.

When they carried her out to see me she just whimpered, very softly, over and over again. It was like she wasn't awake enough to actually cry or whine like normal when she sees me after being apart. I felt so bad!

She is good though -- doesn't have to wear the megaphone! She acts like the stitches aren't even there.

We take her back on the 11th to have them removed.

Our Vet is great b/c they have people coming in an monitoring the animals all night -- he's wonderful, we are so lucky to have such a great Vet. She wasn't even traumatized or upset when I got her -- and now, it's like it never even happened!!
