what a crazy scary weekend its been
ds wasnt acting like his normal self saturday night and felt a little warm. i took his temp and it was 100 so i gave him some tylenol. i noticed he kept sticking his fingers in his mouth and figured hes teething.
sunday morning dh took ds to the ped. he didnt have a temp anymore but had some pus on the back of his thoat which the dr said looked viral. he just got over an ear infection and finished the antibiotics that friday. he is also cutting a molar. she suggested tylenol and motrin for pain and if any fever comes back
well fever came back and at 12pm on sunday i gave him motrin. ds took a nap and woke up at 3 - he still felt hot so i gave him tylenol. at 3:30 he stared seizing..
i have never in my life been so helpless and scared. we called 911. the seizure lasted about 3-4 minutes. at the hospital his temp was 104... they brought it down with some more motrin and sent us home after it came down completly. ds has slept with us now 2 nights in a row bc i am afraid.. his temp spiked up again to 102 when i didnt give him medication today - dh wanted to wean him off the tylenol and motrin ... but im back at giving him meds to lower his temps. i have set my alarm at night not to miss a dose..
i dont know when i should stop the tylenol and motrin bc i dont want his temp to sky rocket in a matter of minutes and have a frebile seizure again.. tomorrow will be day 4 if i count saturday of him having a temp but day 3 if i count him having a high temp...
the dr said its a viral infection and can take anywhere from 3-5 days. should i just keep giving him tylenol motrin until day 5? dh thinks thats crazy and i should not give him all that medication but i am scared sh!t.

Re: what a crazy scary weekend its been
Have you asked the doctor how long you should continue giving the meds for? How frequently are you giving the doses and how much at each? I think you should gauge the amount of medicine depending on those things and how your little one is behaving ( and temp of course).
I am SO sorry that your weekend has been like that. That is so scary. I hope he feels better soon and that he doesn't have any more seizures. Good luck!

Re: what a crazy scary weekend its been
My daughter had a febrile seizure too just before her second birthday. Terrifying.
My understanding is that the chance of a seizure is greatest during the first 24 hours of a fever. I think the worst is over on this illness.
Five days of Tylenol/Motrin won't do him any harm. I wouldn't wake him in the middle of the night at this point, but if he is uncomfortable I would give it.

How scary AM This may not be the right answer, but I would stop giving the tylenol/motrin but just monitor him this will let you know when he actually is fever free. Poor William please call me if you need anything. Andrew wants to play when he is feeling better.

Re: what a crazy scary weekend its been
DS was sick, with similar this past weekend 103-104 fever all weekend. took him to the dr on thurs, rapid strep came back neg, so they sent out the more in depth culture. i took him back on sat morning b/c he was really sick, she checked his throat again said it looked the same and to hold off an anitbiotics b/c it may be viral. yesterday i called for the results, he has a type of strep but not A which is what the rapid detects, so he went days without antiobiotics and suffering. i feel your pain, id keep up with the motrin & tylenol, its not worth the risk until he is feeling better.

Re: what a crazy scary weekend its been
What a scary time....Don't stop giving the motrin. You can probably alternate motrin and tylenol but don't stop them both. The fever will come back. Until the virus is out of his system, the fever can come back and another seizure can happen. Call your pedi and ask them what to do...(I remember a little boy who kept having febrile seizures because the parents stopped giving him tylenol when the fever went away. He had 4 in 3 days. I was the EMT on the ambulance. I know it is scary to keep giving him medication, but I feel that this is necessary)
Hope he feels better soon...
