Reference Checking

Do you think large employers check only the 1 top candidate's references or do they check the top 2 (or 3)? I emailed the HR person to check in (my 2nd interview was last week) and she said she is in "the process of checking references" and that she'd be in touch real soon! But, now I'm wondering if maybe she's checking mine AND someone else's before making a decision

At my current company they only checked the top person's references..... They don't give out any offers until the references come back good. I think a lot of companies do this - check the top references and if they come back good make a job offer. If they don't come back good, then they move to the 2nd choice's references.
