To get the flu shot or not to get the flu shot?
So, I've never had a flu shot before.
Did you get the flu shot because you are pregnant? or
Did you still choose not to get the flu shot?
I have a doctor's appointment on Thursday, and I don't think I want to get the flu shot if she asks, but I'm not positive.
What do you think?
Thanks!

Re: To get the flu shot or not to get the flu shot?
If you've never gotten it, I would seriously talk to my doctor because you don't know if you will have any reactions to it. With that being said, I do recommend it because it protects not only you but your baby, even after they are born.

Re: To get the flu shot or not to get the flu shot?
I got it at 12 weeks. My ob highly recommend it. I never had the flu shot before and didn't have any reactions to it.
I got it because I didn't want to risk getting the flu. The flu can be very dangerous for the mother and a developing baby. And even though I never had the flu before, your immune system is weakened during pregnancy so I didn't want to take any chance.

Same here. My OB highly recommends it but my high risk says he would never go against my OB. He did say that he would not give it to his wife. I was on the fence about it anyway so i opted not to get it.

Re: To get the flu shot or not to get the flu shot?
I've never gotten it and signed a waiver not to have it during my pregnancy.
I trusted my gut, it's really a personal decision. My doctor respected that I do not want to take anything while pregnant and said a lot of his patient's have similar views.

Re: To get the flu shot or not to get the flu shot?
I never get a flu shot in general (my sons and DH all do get one) and didn't get a flu shot either of my past 2 pregnancies. I am not prone to getting very sick and honestly didn't bother trying to locate one and didn't deem it important.
I did however decide to get one this pregnancy. Just got it on Friday. My sinuses have been out of control this pregnancy and feel like my immune system is not where it normally is. I had a small cold a couple weeks ago that in a matter of days turned to an bad asthma attack and bronchitis. I figured I try it out. My dr recommended it esp after telling her about the asthma attack I had.

Re: To get the flu shot or not to get the flu shot?
I got it-my OB gave it to me Wednesday. We weighed out the pros ans cons, and truly-with my commute into NYC every day, on the LIRR and subways, I felt it was too much of a risk NOT to get it..
The flu shots the OB gives are mercury free.

I never get the flu shot and I was on the fence about getting it this time. I decided not to and my OB supported my decision. She did suggest to take extra vitamin C, wash hands more often and just take care of myself

Re: To get the flu shot or not to get the flu shot?
I got it once when I was younger and got sick. I know people say you do not get sick from it anymore. I haven't had one since elementary school and I did not get it while pregnant either. It is a personal choice for everyone. Do what you feel you want to do. I am a teacher and in the 9 years I taught I have had it once. Plus my DD is in 3 weeks I think I will be ok. But again JMO.

Re: To get the flu shot or not to get the flu shot?
I never got the flu shot until now. My doctor was adamant about it. I teach kindergarten so Im surrounded by germs and Im pregnant with twins. I was very nervous but I did it. It was fine. I had no reaction and the babies are doing great.

Re: To get the flu shot or not to get the flu shot?
Ive had the flu in the past which is why I chose to get the flu shot. Honestly if I had to do it all over again, I probably wouldnt have gotten it.
If your OB doesnt give out the shots, you can go to a pharmacy or your GP. Just make sure they have the preservative free shots. The Rite Aid by my house had them.

Re: To get the flu shot or not to get the flu shot?
Thanks for all of your responses. I appreciate all of your thoughts.. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do, but I think DH and I will have to make a decision together.
I'm a teacher in a high school, and I'm prone to bronchitis and sinusitis every year, but not the flu... but I'll definitely see what the OB says as well.
Enjoy your Sunday night everyone!

Re: To get the flu shot or not to get the flu shot?
I just got the flu shot for the first time in my life. It didn't hurt and I had no reaction to it. 2 of the dr.s I have been seeing highly recommended it and said if a pregnant woman ends up with the flu it an be very serious for you and your baby.

Re: To get the flu shot or not to get the flu shot?
I got the flu shot when I was almost 8 months pregnant. DS was born the end of October. I had gotten it before and wasn't about to miss it while I was preggo. Good thing I did. One of the nurses in the Maternity ward had the flu while I was there...DS was protected against it because the vaccine passed on to him while I was preggo... It is all up to you if you want it or not. Your DC won't be able to get it until he/she is over 6 months old.

Re: To get the flu shot or not to get the flu shot?
I never had the flu shot, and my OBGYN STRONGLY recommended getting one. I talked to her about it for quite some time, and decided to go for it because she made some strong points that I honestly did not consider before talking to her. Besides a sore arm for a couple of days, I feel fine since getting it!
