Mommies who used bumpers in crib...question
i know bumpers are a little controversial, but we have them and they are really secure, hard and very tight to the rails. anyway, i put the mattress pad over the mattress, then the crib sheet, then a little sheet saver (that piece that ties to the rails/good for drool catching). i also reg'd for the ultimate crib sheet, which supposedly is easy and replaces all of the above (not nearly as pretty though). ok...so i didn't even put the ultimate crib sheet on because the whole thing seems null and void to me, because when the baby gets the crib sheet dirty, unless i'm missing something, it seems i have to take the bumpers OFF to even change the sheet. Moms with bumpers, did you have to remove your bumpers each time you changed soiled sheets or did you just lift them up/loosen the ties? meanwhile DH is saying, "she will have a diaper on; how dirty can she get the sheet?" my dad started laughing and announced that i used to projectile vomit and poop at once. lovely. anyway, seems like the ultimate crib sheet is more for cribs without bumpers.

I always just used a regular sheets and I would take untie one section of the bumper take the mattress out and put it back.
Your husband will be surprised by how many leaky diapers you may have, even with a girl, in the beginning.

Re: Mommies who used bumpers in crib...question
As a BTDT mom I'm going to be honest here. We used bumpers. And DS had a vinyl mattress. I never used a mattress protector, ultimate crib sheet, none of that. Just the fitted sheet.
He didn't sleep in his crib until he was 7 months old. And by then he was spitting up in the middle of the night or anything. Never even had an explosive diaper in his crib.
As far as your question, because I didn't have all of that stuff, I was able to just take off the fitted crib sheet to wash it. Didn't need to touch the bumper.

We used the sheet saver in the beginning and didn't have to remove the bumper when taking that off, now that we use just the sheet we do remove the bumper to change sheets..DH does that

Re: Mommies who used bumpers in crib...question
I never untied or removed the bumpers I just pulled up the mattress completely out on one side and replaced the sheet and put it back and fixed the bumpers when I was done. BTW I had that sheet saver thing and I never used it I put in the crib and the day after DS came home I took it off. If they drool and it skeevs you change the sheets. You don't want to make more work for yourself when you will already will have enough.
Edited to say DS also has a vinyl mattress.

well, nothing about her will skeeve me but the sheet saver seemed like a quick way to just change that if it's the only thing that is dirty, rather than the whole sheet. and that part is easy enough to untie without lifting bumpers off.

Re: Mommies who used bumpers in crib...question
I had a pretty sheet, then the bumper, and the ultimate crib sheet. I LOVED that thing. No, it wasn't pretty, but you could still see the pretty sheet when you looked at the crib from the outside. The ultimate crib sheet was the easiest thing ever to change. I never took off the bumper unless I was changing the pretty sheet.

Supposedly the ultimate crib sheet is so great b/c if the baby does have an accident you don't have to take anything off. you just unsnap it and remove it and go on. Otherwise you do have to take everything off to clean the sheets...
That's what I am told and plan on using it when DS gets into the crib :)

Same here.
Maybe I got lucky, I never had explosions or anything that required a sheet change. Just the weekly sheet change.

I have the breathable bumpers and it is such a PITA to change the sheets.
Luckily, I only have to do it once a week - she never had a blow out at night

but the ultimate crib sheet snaps around the rails....and if you use a bumper and that's all tied around the rails as well there's no real way to get the UCS off without untying at least some/all of the bows to the bumper so you can lift off the sheet. this was what i thought, too...and i didn't even end up putting it on bc of this.

I snapped mine under the bumper and had no trouble getting it unsnapped/re-snapped under the bumper ties. It was super easy.

Ditto. The ultimate crib sheet has snaps attached to elastic straps. You can keep the bumper tied and you just wrap the elastic straps around the slats of the crib underneath the bumper and snap. This is what I do. I even use it now and DS is 21 months. With being so big already with #2 I can't even possibly try to get the mattress out so if DS has an accident or gets sick I just pull the sheet off the best I can and snap the UCS on top of the mattress till DH comes home and can take out the mattress.

Re: Mommies who used bumpers in crib...question
I used bumpers and I never had to fully remove the bumper to change the sheets. I did find a way to open a couple ties and slip out that mattress....takes practice but I figured it out. I will say I was very lucky and I can honestly count on two hands the amount of times I had to change the crib sheet other than for regular maintaining and keeping clean (rarely in the middle of the night and I am 2 kids down....hopefully didn't jinx myself for the third). I didn't have many leaky diapers and vomitting. I did use the sheet savers for spit up in the early stages and those are easy yo pick up and remove.

Bumpers are a controversial product? I never knew that. I thought they were necessary. Why WOULDN'T you use them?
Anyway, I'm a first time mom and baby hasn't been born yet so I can't really say for sure. But I think I'll probably end up just having to take the entire bumper off each time I change the sheet. To be honest, i haven't even thought about it yet. lol.
