Re: wrong career..

I am a social worker. While I enjoy my field for the most part, I've been working with the same program/population for about 6 years now and I am starting to feel the itch for a change. I have been at my current agency for 3 years which I think is a big part of my dissatisfaction many days.

The role I am in is extremely stressful and my agency can be less than supportive (I work for a for-profit). I have "businessmen" supervising me so we often butt heads.......which is putting it mildly.

It's hard to work for people who don't "get" what a social worker does and only sees $$$$ signs with clients.

Re: wrong career..

P.S. Going back to school for something else is NOT an option for me either. I am already in an embarassing amount of debt with the amount I spent in student loans. I can't imagine adding more to that. DH makes fun of me for it too.

Slightly OT: I'm the businesswoman who deals with social workers and programs. I do accounts receivable for a non profit.

It's just as challenging trying to find money to pay for the social workers and all the other bills that we have to pay when you only have a small amount of money coming in from insurances and grants as it is for you to try to focus on client care when you have accounting harping on you. I know for our agency we hear the same gripes from our social workers and other clinical staff, but there has to be a bottom line somewhere. For example, if there are progress notes which need to be turned in, get them in timely so we can bill Medicaid and get money. I swear, if people were told you don't get YOUR paycheck until X,Y and Z are done they'd be done timely. (And I'm not implying YOU personally don't do your job, but your coworkers who may be a little slow in that area affect cash flow) Just like in our personal lives, if there is no money coming in, there is none going out.

Back on topic: DH is currently in school for funeral directing, because he HATES his current job (call center supervisor). Once he is finished with school and residency and established in a home somewhere (3-5 years from now) then I will be returning to school for respiratory therapy. I've been doing medical billing and accounts receivable for over 15 years, it's time for a change.......

Re: wrong career..

Honestly, I am not talking about "billing" issues at all..........more like trying to force services on people, or,enabling clients by doing stuff that is not making them independent, or trying to do the impossible for clients who are seriously distrubed who want you at their beck and call 24/7 because that "is what customer service is all about and we don't want to lose the case".

And not to go back and forth either, but I think we can be entitled to our feelings whether it's based on billing or what I am describing. These are not things that I went into this field to have to put up with day in and day out.......I'm not talking here and there this stuff coming up..........but when it turns into the daily freakin' focus when going into work.........THAT is what I am talking about.

ETA: I've been told on more than one occasion that "I" need to call up and apologize for screwing up something that I never screwed up (i.e. something that's been messed up with the client's life for years.). I've been told to call up and tell a client that I am going to get him a new apartment when there is no money to be had for said apartment (because he's calling and bugging the VP/President of the company). Again, when you aren't in the trenches day in and day out you don't always "get" the problems we come across as social workers.

Don't mean to go off on a tangent, but felt like I needed to add more details.

Yes I've been feeling that way alot lately. Not sure if it's because my job was just changed ALOT and the hours are so much longer with no added pay, as well as teh stress level. But I feel like I've done this my entire career and now I don't know what else I would do. I do not want to go back to school either!

Re: wrong career..

So do any working moms who changed careers have advice about HOW to go about doing it? I wish I could just quit and go back to school full time but that is not happening....Chat Icon
