I love that population too and have generally heard that the healthcare benefits are a lot better, and a lot of them do have good perks like flexible schedule.
I have sent resumes several times to multiple agencies here on LI that work with that population and do not get any kind of response.
It leaves me  because I think I definitely have the experience and I constantly see that a lot of these places are ALWAYS hiring.
I wonder again if it is an "HR" issue?

i think i may be one of the luckier ones after reading this thread. I graduated from a private school with a BA psych major. I got a job in a non profit as asst. program director 7 years ago. Since then, Ive held various positions at the agency and went back to get my MSW at hunter. I was able to do my internship at the agency and maintain my pay.
Now im a program director which is no big deal. I'm getting paid upper 40s with very affordable health ins. I havent had a raise in 2years and we are dealing with funding/political issues at the moment which are confounding my chances for a raise.
I love the population i work with (senior adults) and I love the fact that I have the tools and the degree to change "careers". Meaning that there are so many different settings and populations that you can work in with this degree. If you are loking into SSW, maybe you can look at charter schools (seems like the only option at this time). HTH

I will FM you, but just to share with others, it seems that the agencies that work with the DD population have very few social workers which could be why its hard to get a call. Its only me and my supervisor, spread thin between several programs within the agency. You wouldn't believe my "caseload"!

im not a social worker but i did graduate with my masters in school counseling in 2008 and am still looking for a job....i recently went on an interview for substance abuse counseling but bc i have NO experience I didnt get it....do any of you know if its a big deal to change from school counseling to mental health or substance abuse counselor without going back to school (I cant handle anymore school loans)

Unfortunately, I know several people who majored in what you did who are in your position, throughout NYS.
I would think that you should try to find an entry-level job with any of those populations and get the experience that way. Why shell out any more $$$$ to just wind up in the same position you are in now?
Several people I know who had a tough time finding work started out in residential programs and such where the pay $ucks but the experience is priceless. If you are good, you will usually have the chance to advance quickly through the agency, and at the same time, network through contacts you meet through other agencies that your clients utilize.

not worth it. Starting positions with a masters are like <40,000 without experience...it's a thankless job for the most part. You have to keep yourself motivated...meaning you have to love what you do. when i was in the non-profit sector, i was in a management level position that capped out at around 45,000 or 47,000... after 8 years in the company....it was great in my early twenties, but as real life expenses hit...it was a crap salary...
i am in the social work field technically, and do QA for licensed agencies, but have my Masters in healthcare management, more flexibility and management opportunities....i dropped out of the SW program. There are certain jobs that are better than others....
overall of love my career choice, and sacrifice a big shot corporate salary for job satisfaction

It depends.
I have my Ba in Psych, 1 MA in Forensic Psych, getting my 2nd MA in Forensic Mentalh Health Counseling.
Luckily I was able to get a decent paying job (after 3 years almost in the 50's) with my 1st MA at a non-profit w/great benefits. The problem is it was a grant funded program so that's now ending. After realizing I couldn't do anything with a MA in Psych b/c of changes in licensing laws I'm going back for the MHC degree which I can get licensed for.
I originally planned to go for my Ph.D but I can't do another 6 years of school full time w/o being allowed to work. If i knew this before I would have go for SW degree instead of Psych (although I do love testing).
