When can we put the car seat forward?
I know we have awhile, I just need to plan on which car seat to buy because I am worried about it fitting in my Jeep. Is there a certain age to put it forward or a weight requirement? Also, if anyone on here has a Jeep, did you find that you have a hard time finding one that fits because right now with the infant seat I have to move the passenger seat almost all the way forward for it to fit making it not comfy for me to sit up there when DH is driving.

Re: When can we put the car seat forward?
They're now recommending to stay rear facing as long as possible - 2 yrs is best. DS is 15 months and is still rear facing and will be until he grows too tall to fit that way (He's on the small side). 1 yr is the minimum for turning the carseat forward regardless of weight/height (I *think*)

Re: When can we put the car seat forward?
Legally, the child has to be 1y/o AND 20 lbs....so if you have a peanut, he/she should technically stay rearfacing past 1 year if they are not 20lbs at their first birthday!
However, like the pp stated, they recommend rear facing as long as possible...preferably 2 y/o

No! The absolute minimum is that your DC must be at least 1 year old AND at least 20 pounds. So just because your DS is over 20 pounds, he's not 1 year yet.
AND, the new recommendations are that you keep DC rear facing as long as possible. They are saying 2 now. Even up to the height/weight limits for the car seat.
It's all about the development of the neck and spine and to me, it's not worth turning DC around early if it risks a broken neck or worse. DD will be rear facing until 2. She's almost 13 months.

That is what's required, the new recommendation rear facing as long as possible, preferably 2 years old.

Re: When can we put the car seat forward?
I had DD#1 rear facing until she was about 22 months, at which point it just got really tough to get her into the seat that way.
DD#2 is 20 months and is still rear facing, with no issues getting her into the seat. I plan to keep her that way as long as I can. I actually had her front facing for a short trip today because we weren't in my car, and even though she was exhausted she didn't fall asleep, I guess b/c it was all so new for her!

Re: When can we put the car seat forward?
1 year and 20 lbs they have to be rear facing.
2 years is a new suggestion/recomendation and is not a requirement.
both of my DD's were turned around between 12-13 months and the LO is only 6 months now so she's still rear facing. We will probably turn her around at the same time unless there i a specific reason from our dr to keep her rear facing.

Re: When can we put the car seat forward?
I find that I have more space to put the seat back with the convertible seat rear facing than I did with the infant seat based on the way the seat is designed.
I have a Britax Roundabout 55 in my inlaws Grand Cherokee and they have more room to move the seat back. I have a Marathon 70 in my Subaru Forester and have more room as well.

Same here. We kept my first daughter rear-facing until she was 19 months...wish I waited longer now.

Re: When can we put the car seat forward?
I just switched my kids at 25 months because 1 was at the limit for the rear facing position(Britax Marathon) If I could I would have kept them RF longer. It is the safest way for small children to travel

Re: When can we put the car seat forward?
There are no actual laws about rear-facing, just the generic and vague "appropriate restraint system". The old recommendation was 1 year AND 20 lbs. The new recommendation is 2 years.
It's purely a safety issue and body structure issue. Younger babies, no matter how much they weigh, can't handle a front-end collision. Their neck needs to mature, and weight doesn't make their neck stronger, just time.

Re: When can we put the car seat forward?
My DD is 24 months and she's still RF. She is only 25 pounds and her car seat can hold up to 40 pounds RF.
