Returning part time? How do I talk to my principal?

I'm a HS GC and college advisor in NYC. When I went out on maternity leave, the new admins hired TWO people to replace me, a guidance counselor ATR and a part-time college advisor that came out of retirement. (This was the closest the new principal has ever come to admitting that I work hard and have a big job. But I digress).

For next September, I think I want the college advisor's job. I don't want to go back full time. But if I work three days, I get health insurance, and mine is better and cheaper than DH's. Last year, it really was too much for one person to do it all, and I really feel like splitting the job makes it easier to give all 400+ kids the personalized attention they need.

Here's the thing though. The principal doesn't like me much (her ethics and conscience have gone out the window; mine are still mostly intact. We've had some interesting arguments in the past b/c of this). She's not going to do me any favors w/o some serious convincing. I know I have the right to bump the replacements out and reclaim my desk. She knows this. But I'm not sure how to ask for part of my job back, or convince her that this is the best idea for everyone. Any ideas?

edited b/c typing with a baby on my lap is hard, lol

That's a hard time, especially during the current fiscal crisis. Two part-timers cost significantly more than one full-timer. If you're thinking you work 3 days, as does the other person, they are paying benefits, health insurance, and retirement for both employees. I can't think of any argument that would make that a worthwhile investment.

I guess I didn't explain myself well.

The principal hired two people to replace me. She's already paying one and a half salaries. I wouldn't be asking to come back in addition to the two people already there; I want to ask her to come back in place of the part-timer.

can you pop over one day with that cute little baby? Who can resist a cute little baby? And then talk to her?

I'm not sure of how seniority plays a role, but you might not be able to contractually. Some contracts, last one in is part-time.
