Re: When did your toddler start to talk?
What do you mean by real communication - like talking in sentances or just saying words?

Re: When did your toddler start to talk?
DS was on the earlier end. He was talking (saying words) around 15 months. By 18/19 months he was communicating his wants/needs.
But every kid is different. My neighbor's DD is going to be 2 in a few weeks. She only started talking maybe 2 months ago, but she still isnt communicating...just labeling things really

Re: When did your toddler start to talk?
Around 20 months DS started doing the "labeling".
By 2 years 3 months (ish) he really started putting words together to form sentences.
I was always afraid he was delayed, but I'm glad I decided to wait it out. He definitely is where he should be now for his age at 2 years 7 months.

Re: When did your toddler start to talk?
A few words between 15-18 months. Around 20 months even more. Now at 2 (a few days ago) she is talking a lot more and repeating basically everything that we say. I wouldn't say we carry on a conversation, but she can communicate what she wants.

Re: When did your toddler start to talk?
DS started having words at 17-18m.
Now at 22m, he is just beginning to be able to really communicate with 2 word phrases. Prior to that, he'd point and recognize objects but wasn't so good at expressing what he wanted with words.

Re: When did your toddler start to talk?
he really didn't talk too much until around 18 months.....
then somewhere between 18 months and 24 months he had that "explosion." It was the PERFECT word for it. He hasn't stopped talking since.

Re: When did your toddler start to talk?
About 25-26 months (he was delayed). But his speech really exploded pretty quickly after he expanded his vocaulary to more than 5 words.

Re: When did your toddler start to talk?
Sentences at 15 months... but he was very advanced. He should be excluded from these questions.
All kids are different. My twins are already so far behind where Landon was at their age. I also have relatives that didn't say anything until 24 months, and now they are perfectly fine.
Have you mentioned your concerns to the pediatrician?

Re: When did your toddler start to talk?
When prompted, DS will say "help" and "more" and he says "dada" and "yaya" (instead of mama...) That's about it. He's 15.5 months old.

Re: When did your toddler start to talk?
DS is 15.5 months; he says mama, dada, baba, and uh-oh (but its backwards..so he goes Oh-UH..LOL).
He just started saying HIEEEE and wave when i wave and say hi to him. Other than that he has his babbling and own language it seems. he points, grunts to communicate with me.

Re: When did your toddler start to talk?
Have you tried teaching simple sign language? There are several videos out there that are fun for them to watch and they can learn quickly.... (I think baby Einstein has one and I had another series also)
Have there been lots of temper tantrums? Sometimes if they can't communicate, they have many episodes b/c they are so frustrated... (It's not a "smart or not smart" thing - they know what they want and are frustrated that they can't communicate it)
I taught my little one sign language (just the basics - eat, milk, more, tired, bath, etc) and she used it even after she started talking - but I think it helps the whole communication development...
Just my thoughts - I'm no doctor... It might help.

Re: When did your toddler start to talk?
Started saying words around 18months and now at 23 months he knows about 50 words maybe more. He is starting to speak two or three word sentences. I was worried about him for a while since he was saying very little and no Mommy or Daddy, but then he had a word explosion around 20 months.

Re: When did your toddler start to talk?
DS1 had about 40-50 words around 14-15 months. 2-3 word sentence around 18 months
DS2 is 15 months and around the same. Single words still but def. communicating. Wants a drink, will go to frigde and say milk or juice. Yesterday was tugging on his jacket saying hot- he was steamy in there Mostly labeling -fruits, animals, simple objects

This is DD too. She started single words by her 15 month appt. Now at 20 months she can string together 3 word sentences. They are not at all gramtically correct.....it's more like "mama, sit, butt." Meaning Mama, come sit here on the couch.

Re: When did your toddler start to talk?
Carlie is Turning 15 months this week...
But for the last month or more she knows the below Hi Bye Wow Uh Ho Milk (but says Mil) Mama Dada Nana DooDoo Bubbles (but says Bubbas) Book Ball Up Down Side Baby
And then some animal sounds like Moo, Baa Baa etc...
She also understands the meaning of these words, so she ask for Milk when she wants it... and when she sees bubbles she says it...
I don't know if this is considered talking like its not full sentences or anything...

Re: When did your toddler start to talk?
My DS is 18 months today and he has very few words, "mama", "get", "wa" (he means wash, he likes to do the laundry with me), and he tries to say the name of our friends dog, "Dixie". That's it. I swear, I think this morning he said "duck", but I haven't heard it again. When he sees an elephant he says "ehhhh". He's trying but the words aren't too clear yet. I'm waiting for that "explosion" too! He also signs "more" and "all done". Trying to teach him some other signs too.
I did buy 2 DVD's that seem to be helping and he loves them. "Baby Babble 1 & 2". They were developed by 2 speech pathologists.
