DS is stuttering....
So for about 3 days now DS (2.5) has started to stutter. 90% of me feels its just his brain working quicker than his mouth. He is really forming sentences now and I think his mouth isn't moving as fast as his brain is.
What are some tricks in explaining to him to slow down? When I tell him to talk slower he just gives up and walks away. Not mad or frustrated, just sort of surrenders.
eta - he isn't stuttering in the sense he is repeating words...it is more like he is repeating syllables "gram, gram, gram, gram, grama home soon" (grandma)

Re: DS is stuttering....
#1 thing is do not interrupt him and tell him to slow down. He's getting frustrated. Best thing to do is speak as you want him to speak. Talk slow around him and take deep breaths.
Tell your ped. It's probably just him learning to make sentences. But I started stuttering around 3 or 4. So it's possible. FM if you have questions.

Re: DS is stuttering....
My DS will do this when he is trying to figure out what he wants to say. Kinda like when he starts talking before his mind actually knows 100% where he is going with it!
I think it was parents magazine I just read this in, but they said its normal around the age of 3ish as they are just learning to navigate their vast vocab and thoughts now.
I woudl give it some time to see if its a true stutter or just like you said his mind an mouth catching up with each other!

most times that's exactly what it is at this age, but I would check with a dr anyway.

Re: DS is stuttering....
My DD#1 does something similar - I was watching her and see seems to do it when she is really excited to tell me something or upset.
She will do something like this: "I want I want I want I want to tell you that wizard of oz is just like Alice mommy" (she was telling that the scene where the house is in the tornado is like Alice falling down the hole).

Re: DS is stuttering....
It's actually very common and normal at this age. Just don't draw attention to it. Don't try to finish his sentences. Let him get it out. It should pass. It may take a few months. But, stuttering during language developing is pretty normal.

Re: DS is stuttering....
This is Josh.
It really only happens at certain times, I have been making notes of it. 1. If he is trying to be a know it all... 2. If he is asking me for something and he is scared I will say no 3. If he saw something on TV or something happened to him during the day...he will report it to Leo that night. Remembering, reporting at the same time...makes for a long stuttering story.
We completely ignore it. I don't make eye contact with him...I just let it go. He knows he is doing it.
Ped heard him at 4 year old appt. Said it is so common and happy that he only does it sometimes and not all the time. Giving it a year to see if it improves.

Re: DS is stuttering....
I stutter. It's worse with my mom, I think it's her fault. She ALWAYS interrupts me, finishes my sentences and rushes me to finish.

Re: DS is stuttering....
Hi my ds started stuttering at age three......since he was getting ei for speech I thought it was part of his speech issue. Took him to a stuttering specialist Uri Schneider.............his father is the head of the Speech and Language dept at Queens College. After a few visits and some tips that I can't remember, it left as quickly as it came. Uri was very nice also. He called several times to talk with us and follow up. Now 5 years later when I look back on it I should have waited before going to Uri. It was a stage and it past.

I just love Phil and Uri Schneider (Phil was one of my professor at QC and Uri graduated the year after me)...they are fantastic fluency specialists and you could not get better counseling out there. I do see the value in speaking with a specialist regarding your DC b/c based on the types of blocks and/or dysfluencies your child is having they can determine if your child is a candidate and/or if this is something you need to wait out. Either way the fluency/stuttering specialist will provide you with how to best deal with whats happening.
If you do seek professional advice I highly recommend that you see a fluency specialist and not just any SLP...this is an area of specialty and while all SLPs can treat stuttering not all of them have the depth of knowledge in this area required to treat these children/adults.
Uri and Phil Schneider are fantastic but if you are in Suffolk, Joy Kling is another SLP who specializes in fluency and runs a free childrens group once a month to help educate parents and provide little ones the opportunity to play and be comfortable around other children who stutter. FM me if you want more info.

ITA: Stuttering is highly specialized. I hate to treat it because I am just not comfortable with it since I don't have much experience. I work in a school so of course sometimes I don't have a choice. But, I really don't feel like I am the most qualified person. If it comes to the point where you need to take him, take him to a fluency specialist.

Not my area either....I don't think I'd know where to begin with fluency.
