Has anyone gone on strike with cleaning up toys?** now edited with pics of what I came home to
I am at my wits end with the toys strewn all over my house. DH just laughs at me (and even contributes to the mess) and says "they're kids let them play with their toys." Yes, I get that but NO-ONE cleans up not even DH!! I've tried holding off on priveleges until toys are cleaned but it doesn't seem to be working. Any suggestions? I've taken toys away, thrown out toys, continuously cleaned up after everyone. I'm seriously thinking of going on strike and not picking up another toy. I'm afraid this will backfire on me somehow though. Suggestions? Image Attachment(s):

I've stoppped cleaning their rooms. I WILL NOT DO IT. I clean the downstairs, and do everything else short of wipe their butts for them and I draw the line at their rooms. If their rooms are not in respectable shape at the end of the day, there is no dessert or TV that day.
Their rooms currently look like bombs went off in them. If they don't care, I don't care.
Edited to say my DS is 10 and my DD will be 5 in 2 weeks. Obviously I clean up after the 21 month old.

I tried that. The only one that the strike hurt was me. No one else cared that the house was a complete disaster. I make DD clean up her toys but the major cleaning I do. DH doesn't clean up after himself either. I let his laundry sit on the floor for the longest time when I was on strike and it bothered me the entire time. All he did is throw a load of laudry in when he was out of jeans. So I just suck it up, do it, and complain about it lol. Good luck!

No, but I have dragged an entire filled toybox out to the garage and it didn't come back until they showed me that they'd put away the rest of their stuff. I made sure I'd put all their fave stuff in the toybox so they'd really want it back.
I've also brought a big black garbage bag down to the den and started to fill it with the toys on the floor, they jumped up pretty quick and cleaned up. Now I just have to say "Do I need to get a black bag?" and they clean up.

The funny thing is that my 23 month old cleans better than his siblings. My problem is that we live in a ranch and although I gave up a long time ago keeping their bedrooms clean the toys start coming out of the rooms and the toys from the storage in the living room starts coming into their bedrooms. I tried the no dessert/treat routine but it's loosing its potency.

I have no problem doing laundry or cleaning the house. It's the toys that drive me crazy and the fact that DH plays with trains/Geo trax and leaves everything out scattered around. Shouldn't he be setting an example for his kids. I didn't sign on for 4 kids (this is starting to sound more like a DH beetch session, lol) Am I expecting too much from a 5 and 3 yr old? Forget about the 39 yr old

Charlie is only 2.5yo but I don't let her start a new project or start playing with another set of toys (ie: she plays with Thomas the trains & then moves on to her dollhouse) until she puts the first toy(s) away. I also don't let her just leave her toys around if shes done playing and she wants to watch a show or its time to eat, go to bed, etc.
She's young so I can't expect her to put it all away by herself, so I give her a task and I do another. When friends are over, that's another story - I usually pick up after them (bc I'm quasi-neurotic about the mess  ).

I would tell them they have until dinnertime to clean up their toys...whatever was not in the correct place at dinnertime I'd put in a garbage bag and take it to the curb right away. Eventually they'll get the hint.
Sorry you had to come home to that...I'd be pi$$ed too!!

I am lucky that I have a DH with OCD who he can't sleep at night unless everything is clean. If he goes on strike, I'm in trouble.

 I always tell DS that he can have no more than 3 toys/games outside and if he doesn't clean un and I am the one doing it, I'll put the toys in the garbage. The first one doesn't work but the last one always does.

Definitely...the first time we did this SD FREAKED out...hysterical screaming and crying, fit throwing...we basically just ignored the behavior and calmly told her that she had the power to prevent this sort of thing happening in the future. It didn't completely stop the behavior, but the mess has definitely lessened.

Someone on here (I think) would tell their kids "If I have to pick it up, I get to keep it" and I did that a few times with DS and eventually it worked.
He's not perfect and I do have to get after him sometimes but its been a lot better.
Now if I could get DH to stop leaving his shoes all over the place I be a happy girl!

There with you on this too with the DH. Mine doesn't even know where anything goes, it's BS. And I spend a lot of time trying to make it easy for things to be organized. Then I look at my clutterspot (kitchen island which is right out in the open when you walk in the door!) and there are various things that can just as easily be put away but are left out. I'm not anal but it irritates me that my DH contributes needlessly. ie, an opened envelope that he could just as easily put in the recycling bin is sitting on the island.
