Flying with pumped breastmilk?
Anyone have experiences with this? I have to go to my sister's bachelorette party one weekend coming up and need to pump while I am there. I am planning on traveling back on the plane with the breastmilk, although I won't have DS with me. I am hoping I won't have any problems b/c I really can't afford to dump the milk.

it's not a problem at all. I just did it a few months ago when I went to Vegas without DS. When you get to the TSA security check, tell the person that you are flying with breast milk. They will open the bag that you are carrying the milk in and ask you to open a bottle or bag (however the milk is stored). They will hold a small piece or test paper over the bottle or bag for a few seconds to test it and then your pretty much on your way. They will not touch or contaminate the milk in anyway. It was very easy and quick.

FYI: They will not allow you to bring cold packs to keep the milk cold. Here's how I got around that:
I brought 2 gallon-size Ziploc bags full of ice with me to the airport. Packed them on either side of the milk to keep it cold. Then, when I got to the security line, I dumped the ice out of the bags and scrunched the bags back up in the cooler. When I got through security, I'd make a beeline for the nearest concession stand, buy a drink, and get my bags refilled with ice.
All in all, the most they were ever not on ice was about 1/2 hour.
As the OP said, just let them know you are carrying breast milk so they are aware.

I had cold packs and it wasn't a problem at all. I actually called the TSA phone number from the website before my trip and they said it was ok to bring cold packs.

This isn't actually true. They are required to let you bring cold packs through security too. That being said, I don't know if some airports choose to ignore that rule. I brought ice and BM home without DD with no problem. I was also flying out of Orlando and I got the impressions that they deal with this all the time. Just make sure you tell a TSA agent that you have it score you put your bags through the x-ray machine.

I considered breastmilk liquid gold. As difficult as it was, I pumped and dumped. I didn't think it was worth it to bring it back on the plane.
Originally I was planning to put the breastmilk in my checked luggage with ice. I was under the impression that you couldn't carry it on since it was a liquid when you didn't have a child with you. I never actually flew with breastmilk though.

Definitely do NOT check it! You don't want your milk out of your sight. TSA could open it and you would never know if it was contaminated. Plus, checked bags are subjected to extreme hot temperatures sometimes.
I'm not sure why some people have has trouble. If you follow the rules, there shouldn't be a problem. There are procedures in place because they deal with this many times a day and the TSA doesn't want problems. For them to ask someone to dump their milk, something had to be wrong. I'm sure that you won't have any problems, but if you do, just make sure to deal with a supervisor. Like I said before, I had no problems at all. It literally took 2 extra minutes and it was not a hassle or anything.

They really shouldn't give you a problem as long as you declare it to the TSA person. To avoid the potential ice pack issue, you could use a frozen bag of vegetables as your ice pack. Since it's not liquid, that shouldn't be a problem.

I had no problem when I went through...they didn't ask to look at it...I just took those little collapsible travel coolers you fit in it a diaper bag - out of my bag and put it in one of those trays to go through the machine...they didn't question me at all!
I also checked some frozen bags and since it is so cold in the belly of the train...they didn't even defrost a little!

Wow...I guess that's something relatively recent. I lost 2 of my best cold packs that way, I had to throw them away at the airport the first time we flew with DD  I'm glad they've changed the requirements.
