Does this bother you?

So I was at the post office today. Total was $3.09. I gave her a 5 dollar bill. She asked if I had the 9 cents, I didnt. She was ok with that. She then says, "Thank you, have a nice day" and puts the $1 and 91 cents change on the counter for me to scramble up. Isnt this rude? or am I exaggerating. I always feel its common courtesy to give someone their change in their hand...not put it on the counter for them to pick up. Thoughts?

But they usually wear latex gloves when they are concerned about germs. I suppose that could be a reason though.

Wouldn't bother me in the least. In fact, I might not want them to give it to me in my hands. yeah I know money is already dirty but think about how much $ has passed through their hands already. I've seen a lot of P.O. employees wearing latex gloves for that reason.

It could also be b/c of the PO counter heights and width. She may not be able to reach over to you?

Re: Does this bother you?

When I worked at a bank. I hated handing all the people money.

dealing with money is bad enough with the germs without having to touch hands that could have been anywhere.

I can def. understand hating the fact of dealing with money all day long but what did you do about it? Did you just place the money on the counter for the customer to pick up, did you wear gloves or did you just deal with it? just curious

Re: Does this bother you?

That was a HUGE pet peeve of mine as a cashier. I thought it rude. Especially when you would have your hand out and they would put it on the counter anyway. Chat Icon

FWIW, I've experienced that many places in Europe have a small tray on the counter where they will put your receipt and change in (it kinda looks like an ashtray). I actually found it to be pretty practical. When they give you your change, they place it on the tray and you can clearly see what they are giving you. There is also less chance of the change falling out of your hand and all over the floor.

I really don't see how it's rude or not. I could not care less as long as I get all of my change back.

I guess I only find it rude when my hand is clearly their waiting. If I am not paying attention and it is on the counter its no big deal.

Re: Does this bother you?

i guess thats why the lines are always soooo long and slow at the post officeChat Icon
because people have to stand there and pick up change.
I thought you were going to say she shorted you the change. that bugs me.

I haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate when people don't hand me change in my hand. When I was a cashier it would make me INSANE. I find it SO RUDE. I hate when I am with people who do it, I always tell them not to and I have converted a few people, LOL.

Re: Does this bother you?

I hate it when people give me change in my hand. Especially 91 cents. I usually wind up dropping at least one coin. Then I'm stuck trying to put my wallet in my pocket, the change that is still in my hand in my pocket, find the coin(s) that dropped, get my purchase, etc. So much easier if they put it on the counter and I can pick up the coins and not drop them.

Is it really that difficult to just put it on the counter and be polite, and not force things into my hand? I'm on a mission to convince everyone how good it is to put the change on the counter.....

LOL It IS incredible the amount of insignificant things that we (yes we're all guilty to some degree of this sort of nonsense) are able to find rude or annoying...

Re: Does this bother you?

when that happens I pick up each individual coin slowly so I back up the line.

Yes, that's me. If you are going to make it more difficult for me (the customer) than you can sit there and wait for me to finish and then your next customer will be pizzed (at both of us).

Some cashiers do this because they don't know how to count change back. They just plop it in your hand or on the counter.

Does anyone know how to do that?

I was a bank teller and cashier for years.Chat Icon

Re: Does this bother you?

Yes, it is rude.

It also bothers me when cashiers put the dollar bills in my hand THEN the coins on top of that. They usually go sliding off.

It should be common knowledge to put coins in the hand first, then bills so people can grasp them better. I always handed change to people this way when I was a cashier-it makes more sense. Off my Chat Icon now.
