his FB page is still public, shockingly enough.

Wow - I am looking at this... You can see his complete descent on Saturday!!!! This guy was really off the deep end!!!!

I also can't believe how stupid people are to keep posting on his page - especially the most recent one.

Absolutely the same thing I noticed. And as much as his dad would like to say he didn't drink or do drugs (I might say the same if it were my kid), comments like this one are all over his FB...

Out drinking again and ANOTHER little kid thinks it wise to f*ck with me; I'll say it one last time, I will not hesitate to teach your little brothers a lesson. Next time I will be spilling blood just to amuse myself ?.

I feel bad for the father, after all his son is dead.

But if I make the decision to lunge at a cop with a weapon, I expect to be shot and possibly killed. I don't even slightly question their decision.

Re: Massapequa Park Dad: "Police should not have killed my son." - thoughts? (w/poll)

my thoughts are it doesn't surprise me one bit that the dad said that.

but I am with PearlJamChick.

lunging at a person with an 8 inch blade IS deadly force. just b/c he didn't connect and the cops did doesn't negate that.

where was the dad when his baby boy was terrorizing the neighborhood with a horror film mask on?

the real and true tragedy is the cop who was killed in the aftermath.

that is awful. that is where my sympathies lie. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I feel badly for the Dad. However, if someone came flying at me with knives and I had a gun, I can tell you exactly what I would do.

The officer had a decision: kill or be killed.

Really, what was his purpose of having these knives and walking around with them in his hands and strapped to him?

I hurt for the father. I really do.

I have to have faith that the NCPD acted appropriately.. but 4 rounds does seem excessive. BUT.. without having been there.. my opinion means sh*t.

This is the only comment I fully agree with.

My thoughts go out to all families involved.
The family of the 21 year old, the family of the fallen police officer and the family of, as well as, the MTA police officer that accidentally killed one of his own. It is a very sad situation all around. Who am I to judge.

My take on it, based on my US Marshal uncle who deals with this stuff all the time-

Yes you defend yourself but you don't HAVE to kill a perp to do so. Shoot him/her in the arm or hand to disarm or in the leg to prevent them from running away but to shoot bullet after bullet to me shows that this was not just an act of defense.

He wasn't a child, he was a 21 year old man. What do you expect to happen when you lunge knives at the police after walking in the night with a hockey mask and carrying knives? I would pray to God that my husband would be smart enough to shoot to kill and come home to me and our children. What would you want your husband/wife to do in a situation like that? They did what they were and should be trained to do.

It is if that is what your department instructs you to do and that is what you are trained to do. Also, try shooting a moving target in just the leg or arm while they are lunging at you. Not happening very easily and not worth dying to do.

I will say this as a parent, anyone can understand the sadness this man is feeling at the loss of his son. However, there is no way either parent didn't know there may have been an obvious sign of emotional unstability in thier child.

As a retired police officer, I will say that to clarify some information being said here, POLICE ARE NOT TRAINED TO 'SHOOT TO KILL'. Police are trained, when forced to use their firearm, 'SHOOT TO STOP THE THREAT'. Occasionally, that results in the death of the individual they were trying to stop. Police are also trained to shoot center mass, as this is the obvious largest target. Police are trained to attempt a head shot when the subject appears to be wearing a bullet proof best or other body armor. HOWEVER, THIS HOLLYWOOD BELIEF THAT THEY SHOULD SHOOT A LEG OR HAND OR EVEN MORE RIDICULOUS THE KNIFE OR GUN OR OTHER WEAPON OUT OF THE HAND IS MOVIE AND TV FICTION. Also, the 'zone of saftety' authorizing the use of deadly physical force on someone with a knife is 21 feet. Someone previously stated her husband had a confrontation with a subject with a knife. A knife can be as deadly as a gun in a very close proximity. The Nassau officers' use of deadly physical force on the subject with the knife appears to be to be justified based on the training I had.

An understanding must be made by the public to differentiate from TV/movies and reality.

This incident resulted in ruining several lives. The kinfe wielding individual is dead because of his actions, which resulted in a tremendous loss to his family. His actions resulted in the mistaken shooting of the NCPD Officer, which is a tremendous loss to his family. And the MTA Officer is suffering immensly as well. For all intents and purposes, his life wll never be the same. All of this is a result of the original reason police were called there, to deal with this emotionall disturbed person wielding a knife.

In the past 24 hours, there have been public statements made by NCPD union officials which are inflamatory when the investigation is not complete. NCPD officials will not agree or disagree with those statements because the investigation is ongoing. No one wants to place blame on either the Nassau Officer's actions or the MTA Officer's actions. Neither will help the situation. The news is reporting that it appears that there will not be criminal or departmental charges on the MTA Officer, which indicates to me he acted within a scope of reason to justify shooting. This does not make it any easier. It is a situation that is horrible for all three parties involved and will take years and years for healing. Let's leave it at that.

This MAN used a deadly force. Just because he didnt succeed in hurting someone does not mean he did not use it. Why are criminals given so many rights?

I do feel bad for his father. I'm sure if I was in that situation I would feel the same way. Initially.

Re: Massapequa Park Dad: "Police should not have killed my son." - thoughts? (w/poll)

I'll be honest, I think this discussion is silly. A knife such as the one(s) the suspect had are JUST as deadly as a firearm. As a law enforcement officer, we are trained to shoot for center mass if and only if we have reason to believe that no other method will be effective in subduing a suspect that is trying to KILL you. ITA with the person who said we have no right to judge until we have actually been in that situation.

Re: Massapequa Park Dad: "Police should not have killed my son." - thoughts? (w/poll)

As a parent, I can understand the father and wonder if "they" could have just find a way to stop him without killing him.

But I can understand that a police officer shoot him. They got a 911 call. There is someone with lots of knives...aka WEAPONS. He seems disturbed. Locked himself in the house then charged them. Yeah, I can see why he was shot.

The only thing in the story that disturbs me is the MTA cop who killed another cop. I have A LOT of questions on that part of the story. And honestly I don't quite get the logic being being sorry for him. I do get the situation was "strange" but aren't cops supposed to assess a situation before shooting whatever moves?

Then that's not right, IMO. They should be trained to use discretion. I'm not saying deadly force is NEVER necessary but it's used far too often.

Why do you think there is no training for discretion? Where does this thinking come from? You cannot comment on their training if you have no idea what you are talking about. Why is it ASSUMED there is no training????????

And what is too often? How often do you really hear about an assailant being killed? You make it sound like it happens everyday. If these officers didn't have the training they do, it would happen way more often.

Not just an act of defense.
So I guess the cops went out that night looking to kill someone right?
That's how they get their jollys.
Every cops dream is to go out and shot someone full of bullets.

They did the right thing. The shame of it is the officer had to die because of this a-hole.
It is HIS fault this officer is dead.
As for him- he got what he deserved.

IMO, the cops acted the way they should have. If someone is lunging at you with knives & you already have had terrifying phone calls of him tantilizing the neighbors, you know he is not of sane mind. In terms of the amount of rounds fired, I honestly do not believe it was excessive.

Like others have said, bc of his actions an innocent father doing his job was gunned down.
