My take on it, based on my US Marshal uncle who deals with this stuff all the time-

Yes you defend yourself but you don't HAVE to kill a perp to do so. Shoot him/her in the arm or hand to disarm or in the leg to prevent them from running away but to shoot bullet after bullet to me shows that this was not just an act of defense. [/

They never WANT to kill the perp and your Uncle must be a damn good shot under duress, how lucky for you. However, that is not how long enforcement is trained.

I'm not exactly sure that's how the US Marshalls roll - this is from Law Enforcement today -

Law Enforcement Today
St. Louis, Missouri
U.S. Marshal Service
Deputy U.S. Marshal John Perry
End Of Watch: 03-08-11 (click photo to read how this Hero LIVED)
Marshal John Perry, 48, succumbed to injuries sustained when he was gunned down. At 0650 hrs (cst), eight U.S.Marshals along with at least two St. Louis Police Officers worked together as a task force in... an attempt to execute an arrest warrant. When they got to the home, they made sure the children were safely removed. They then began searching the home when, from the second floor of the home, the suspect opened fire on them. Marshal Perry was shot in the head. Another Marshal was also hurt as was one of the St. Louis Officers. The authorities returned fire and the subject, who had previously stated he would not be taken alive, and was killed, believed from the other Officers, though not confirmed. The Officers were transported to hospitals. Brother John was critically wounded and once his family was all there beside his side, at 1900hrs (cst), Deputy U.S. Marshal John Perry was pronounced.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Theodore Abegg, 31, a three year veteran to the Marshal Service, was shot in his lower leg (ankle) and is doing well. (physically)

The St. Louis Officer, 50+, 34 year veteran, had been hit in the chest, his vest deflected, bullet grazed his face. He stumbled back down a flight of stairs and fractured his shoulder. He has been treated and is resting at home.

John began his calling 26 years ago working in Madison County as a DUI Officer and pretrial Officer before becoming an intensive probation Officer for juveniles in hopes to make an impact on these youngsters and show them they had choices. Good choices. He fit well here with his personality. He was a pleasant, genuinely nice, fair and all around fun guy to be around. His co-workers and his charges really took to John. Then, in 2001, John realized he need to do more. With Courage, Integrity, and Honor, John was sworn in as a United States Federal Marshal where he continued to Save, Serve and Protect the People tracking down some of the most violent criminals in order to bring a sense of peace to the people and justice to the victims.

Marshal Perry was in great shape, physically and mentally. He knew how to take care of himself inside and out. Living a healthy life-style, he worked out regularly and biked whenever he could. But laughter was his best medicine. He knew that humor was the only thing that keeps us sane in this insane world we work.

He made a difference in many lives. But none greater than in his own family's life.

John leaves behind his beloved bride and their daughter. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Perry family as well as to all the Men and Women of the U.S. Marshal Service, the St. Louis Metro PD and all surrounding agencies. So many left behind who will miss their Brother, their friend. So many who will Never Forget him. Special thoughts and prayers are with Marshal Abegg and St. Louis Officer for a speedy and full recovery. We pray everyone finds a healthy way to get through this and continue to move forward.

Our Brother, for more than half your life, you Lived Your Life As Only A Hero Could and now You Gave Your Life As Only A Warrior Dare. May you continue your vigilant watch over us all as we carry on in this battle ... In Our Brother's Honor. We Thank You for your service and for your ultimate sacrifice ... for the People. Job Well Done Sir.

Rest In Peace Deputy U.S. Marshal John Perry ... We have the watch from here. SALUTE!

A funeral service for Deputy U.S. Marshal John Perry will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sunday at the Powell Symphony Hall.

One thing- cops are trained to use DEADLY FORCE.
Not disabling force.
Next time, dont' pull a knife on a cop.

This is what I was going to say.

The cops don't create these situations. The person breaking the law does. If this man didn't act the way he did in the first place, the cops would have never been put in that situation. They are trained to protect us so however they decide to handle the "bad guys" is okay with me!

I think this discussion is absolutely ridiculous. Obviously, the cop did what he had to do.

As a parent I can understand the grief his family may be feeling. What I can't understand, is how much denial you would have to be not to see what was going on prior to this. I think the police did what they had to do. It is just a very sad situation all around.

I always cringe when people think discussions are silly or ridiculous (and you know I like you, SlurpeeDad! :) )

I think that discussions always need to happen in order to put things into an arena where different people can share their thoughts, experiences and perspectives.

Discussions (especially where everyone is respectful - which has been happening here - which is great) enable us to learn something we might not have known previously, and it challenges us to think, and some may even change their original stance.

No one can say what the cops should have done. It is already done, they obviously shot their weapons for a reason. They are trained to protect the public and themselves.

A parent is going to want to protect their child in every way possible, but when you don't teach them to act appropriately in society, perhaps there is some fault there.

ITA that they cops probably did what they were supposed to do. But, your comment about the parents not teaching a child to act appropriatley in society and it being party the parents fault.... that really rubs me the wrong way. I am someone who works everyday with ED students and grew up with sister with emotional disturbance issues. Chemical imbalance and psychological problems have NOTHING to do with parental rearing. It is clear that this person had severe issues.

If you feel the need to ask questions about the cop on cop shooting, wait until the investigation is complete. In the meantime, as details emerge, there seems to a source which added to the already chaotic scene. Ch 7 news showed this story tonight...

Yes, but if that was your kid living under your roof and had "severe issues" would you let him have all those knives and weapons in his room and post pictures them on FB? How could the parents sleep at night knowing what he had in his room. That's what I don't get.

THIS!

These parents were in serious denial after viewing this guy's FB page. If they can sit there and claim he was a great kid and never got him professional help for his obvious issues, then they are as much to blame.

Its unfortuante that another officer was kiled by friendly fire no less because of a knife wielding looney. While i feel bad for the father. Why didnt he help his child? Have him in psych therapy. Because honestly he needed it. All i can think of is, if this crazy person came after my husband who is a NYPD Det. i would say shoot to kill not injure. Screw him. Chat Icon

The kid obviously had mental issues. I don't know if the parents necessarily didn't 'teach him how to act appropriately.' However they do have to bear some of the responsibility. I mean, where did all these knives come from and did they not know that they were being kept in their own home?

In the end, this is really just a terrible accident caused by perhaps a lot of unforseen circumstances and in the end someone paid with their life.

I agree, this is what I meant. You can't have your mentally unstable child run around with knives that you know are in your home and not take responsibility. Get rid of the knives, get your kid some help.

not terrorizing your neighborhood, not lunging at officers with some crazy @ss knife = not getting shot

terrorizing your neighborhood, lunging at officers with some crazy @ss knife = getting shot.

too bad...he is NOT the victim here. Those officers had family to return home safely too, they had children to kiss goodnight. They did NOT put themselves in that situation and Im pretty sure would prefer to have not been in it at all. They did what they had to do with a split second to react.

His actions caused himself to be killed, caused his father to lose a son, caused the officers involved to have to live with this for the rest of their lives, have that elderly woman live with this for the rest of her life and the OFFICER THAT WAS kiiled .... he lost his life, his family lost him forever. The officer that shot him will have to live with that the rest of his life.

Case closed as far as Im concerned.

ETA: had the cops not shot him, or they shot him in the leg and he was able to make contact and kill one of the officers, then what would you have said?

If one of those officers were your husband, the father of your children, your best friends husband, your own father.....what would you have wanted him to do?

Admittedly, I have not followed this story but I am curious as to why this was not treated like any other standoff (or maybe it was?). DO they not usually try to "negotiate" with the suspect etc. first? It seems that at that moment - when he was barricaded in his room - in his own house - he was not a threat. He was clearly mentally ill so I am curious as to whether it could have been handled another way before confronting him.

I agree that once the cops were in there with him they had no choice but I am wondering about before that. Again, I do not know the details of this story so maybe it was attempted...

they did, they didnt go into the house shooting, they didnt bust into his room and shoot him, he opened his door and charged at them with a knife, not some standard kitchen knife either.

The news story is basically suggesting that the retired NYPD Sgt. added to the overall confusion of the scene and specifically may be responsible for prompting the MTA Officer to shoot. It has been reported that the retired NYPD Sgt is the one who shouted, "GUN!!" or "HE'S GOT A GUN!!". It is unclear if he was in fact the only one who shoutd that or there were others. However, the point is someone on the scene indicated that as the plain clothes police was approaching the scene, there was a shout of "GUN!!" or "HE'S GOT A GUN!!" which may very well have been what prompted the MTA Officer to assume the plain clothes Officer was an adversary and was going to shoot. What transpired between that moment and the shot is under investigation.

Apparently there was a retired NCPD officer there during mop-up duty. He saw Officer B. walking up to the house with his gun and yelled "he has a gun..." resulting in the MTA cop drawing and shooting.

Again, this is the latest report I heard, which makes a little more sense to me.
