Did anyone skip cereal and go to oatmeal?
we are not yet at the food stage, but DD is a little constipated now and then and I wonder if the rice cereal is too binding in this situation....I'll ask pedi at her 4-month but I always get such good info here! (my SIL also mentioned this to me as food for thought and it hadn't occured to me before, probably b/c I'm new at this!)

Yes. We tried rice for a day or so and she wasnt into it so we went right to oatmeal and she loved it!

Ped told us we can. Said it has a tendancy to constipate babies so she recommended oatmeal

Yeap that's exactly what you do.. and I skipped rice cereal and went straight to oatmeal.

Rice cereal was way too binding for DD... She had a ton of constipation issues. I use some oatmeal with her, but it doesn't make that much of a difference. I pretty much just went straight to purees with her (at 5 months).

rice is AWFUL for DS! everytime he has it, he either does not poop, or it's hard as a rock (sorry tmi)
oatmeal makes him perfectly regular so we do that instead

She was already on an AR formula with rice starch so after a few days of rice cereal she was backed up like crazy!
We switched to oatmeal and she was fine.
We did barley too but that is harder to find so now she just eats oatmeal

We started with Oatmeal. Then added the Rice cereal later. He eats both now except they are the flavored version of Gerber cereal.

I was wondering if anyone had tried barley. I'm starting DS on cereal (got the green light from ped at 4mo checkup on Friday) and was afraid to start on rice bc of constipation. Was going to do barley instead bc I heard it's similar to rice in terms of digestion. Glad to hear everyone's LO's did fine on oatmeal!

I did oatmeal, not rice. But not for the other reasons above. I did it because oatmeal is nutritionally better, and is not as starchy.

Same for us. He loves oatmeal and barley too. Next week we're going to try multi-grain.

Just wanted to add-give her formula first. Then food-so pour a bit of her botle into the cereal. Give her her btl and about 30 mins later give her the food. Food is just for practice right now...she needs the formula more

I want to do the same thing- the ped mentioned that she would prefer that I start rice cereal first because it is less likely to cause an allergy
I meant to ask on here and see what people thought- but it looks like enough parents went straight to oatmeal that it shouldn't be a concern
