A small victory

We were at a 1st bday party last weekend (DH's family). Of course, during dinner, his cousin asks when we are going to have a kid. DH and I both chimed in and said we weren't. And then, much to my surprise (because she has said things about us having kids in the past) MIL jumped in to support us. I almost fell off my chair. And then DH's cousin and his wife mentioned they aren't sure if they will have kids either (they got married around the same time as us).
It's nice to have a "victory" every once in a while.

Re: A small victory

That's awesome. I'd definitely thank your MIL for that, so she knows you appreciate it. When I made a comment on my FB page about being childfree, my cousin sent me a private message thanking me and "confessed" the same.

Re: A small victory

Great story! It is a victory - I think these small steps are already changing American's perception that marriage -->kids..or that women of childbearing age should have kids..NOT ANYMORE. CF couples are on the rise..

I find the entire CF debate fascinating from a demographics point of view. People's decisions about whether or not to reproduce will have a huge impact on the future, both economically and environmentally. The birth rates in Europe, Russia, and Japan are dismally low, and Russia is paying people to have a second child now. Alternatively, in Mexico, the birth rate is falling, but that is a positive for their economy because it was too high.

Regarding world population growth, it is projected to peak in the next couple decades and then stabilize or decline. It is fascinating that many middle class educated Americans are flat out deciding against having kids. It is not just on this board, I know many people in their 30s who don't have kids and probably never will (whether by choice or not).

Here is a link to a Slate article about the declining birth rates and incentives for people to have kids in Russia and Portugal..In my opinion, the US should not be far behind in acting similarly..

Re: A small victory

I'm glad to hear your MIL was supportive! That's annoying that you were asked "when" you were going to have a kid. Chat Icon Not everyone wants to have children and there is nothing bad about that! Different strokes for different folks.

Re: A small victory

Thanks ladies it did feel good. I guess MIL realized she has enough grandkids (8 and a 9th on the way), that she doesn't need anymore from DH and I.
