Can you text at a red light?
I know they are strengthening the texting while driving law...just wasn't sure if red lights count.

I asked DH -
Technically, yes, if you are at a complete stop at the red light you can text or actually make a phone call - but you must be at a COMPLETE stop at the red light..not rolling up to it or rolling from it.

No, you cannot. I got pulled over by a NYC cop a few weeks ago for looking at my email on my phone while stopped at a red light. I was at a complete stop. He said as long as your keys are in the ignition, the texting/cell phone laws apply. Thankfully he let me go, but not without a huge lecture/warning.

Not that this would be a first..then whatever the law is is not clear to all b/c my DH is NYPD too. I"m not saying my DH is the one that is correct, but there is mixed info out there, even amongst the police.
As PP said, better not to do it at all.

i believe when the car in ON, you are operating it.
You can't use a phone (hands on) when the car is being operated.

The law in Suffolk County is actually that they cannot pull you over for texting and driving unless you are committing another infraction (i.e., speeding, changing lanes with out using a signal). Pretty darn crazy. They are working to change that.
