Pros and Cons to owning a fish
DH and I have talked about getting the kids a goldfish so they can have a pet and we have little maintenance.
Curious to the pros and cons of doing it.
TIA

Re: Pros and Cons to owning a fish
cons: I'd say the #1 downside is that they often die - so you have to deal with that or swap them out before the kids notice you have to clean the tank you can't "play" with a fish, so they lose interest quickly
pros: its an easy pet

Re: Pros and Cons to owning a fish
We got a tank over the summer (I wanted a tiny goldfish tank) & we ended up w/ a 20 gallon.
I have to say DD (& now DS) are still interested & argue over who can feed the fish this time and they like watching them swim around/chase e/o.
If you don't overfeed them, it's minimal maintenance. DH cleans the tank maybe once a month & adds water once a week.

Re: Pros and Cons to owning a fish
As background, we have a several gallon fishtank.
Pros: Fish are just interesting. you can teach your kids how to feed the fish, have them help you clean the tank, etc. so they learn some responsibility.
Cons: One little fish might get costly -- once you buy all the stuff like a tank, decorations, etc. Going on vacation? You have to either buy a 7 or 10 day feeder or have someone come feed the fish. They also die easily, and while my kid understands the "burial in the toilet" yours may not. Cleaning the tank is also annoying.

Re: Pros and Cons to owning a fish
A beta fish was DD's first and possibly only pet We have had it for almost a year and aside from a case of "pop eye" that is now cleared up, it has been a breeze. We tried adding a goldfish to the tank but that only lasted about a week. My daughter was a little shocked when it died but she was ok with it which I think is a life lesson that is easier to learn through a fish than any other kind of pet. Good luck!

The cons are how many times DD missed the bus because we were having a tearful funeral for yet ANOTHER fish.
