Unsure where to start, or what to do.
I NEED to get out of my current job.
I am unhappy. The pay is okay, but recently cut everyone down to 35 hours. They have not given a raises in 3+ (and I was "warned" to not even ask). Business has been VERY slow, and moral is in the crapper.
I am signed up on the usual job sites, but need to take more initiative.
Do people still mail out resumes to companies even if a job is not posted? (I did this when I graduated college 100 yrs ago)
Is this a waste of time?
Any suggestions on how to hunt for a job when currently working??

Can you take off a week or even a couple of days to focus strictly on the job hunt?
I also would consider going in person and dropping off my resume to a place I wanted to work at if possible.
I have mailed out a few resumes in the recent past and did not even get a response.
If I really needed to get out of a job, I would put myself out there and pound the pavement literally!

Re: Unsure where to start, or what to do.
I have sent resumes to companies that may not be looking for someone. I try to find the name of their HR person or the head of the department I'd fit into and then fed ex my resume and a cover letter. So far nothing's panned out, but I did get responses from a few that they received my info so I know someone at least looked at it.
I wouldn't recommend going in person unless it's retail though.

Actually, I disagree. I work in human services, and every agency I have worked for accepts walk-ins.
I often see human service agencies that advertise that walk-ins are fine.
Doesn't mean you are guaranteed an on-the-spot interview, but I think it shows a lot of initiative to go in person.
Note: you can also find jobs in places like this that are not necessarily "social workey" in nature (i.e. business, HR, financial, admin, nursing, etc). ;).

This wouldn't fly in my office, no one is seen without an appointment. I think most places are like this.
