Low blood sugar?
this has me a bit concerned.
Every now and then I get really hungry, light headed and sweaty.
I eat and I'm way better.
Then I went to the doctor and he took blood that was non fasting. I ate a bowl of sugary cereal an hour before and he knew I didn't fast. My blood sugar came back at 139 and he said that was a little high even after eating.
We will follow up with another fasting blood test in a month to be sure there isn't an issue.
I looked up some stuff online (I'm bad) and I'm concerned that I may have an issue.
I guess time will tell when I do the fasting bloods but I've never had a high reading with fasting bloods.
Last time I didn't fast and the levels were at 109 after having coffee with milk and sugar.
Thoughts?

Re: Low blood sugar?
i have a test kit at home bc i always feel hypogycemic. even when the number is 80 and i believe drs consider 60 or below hypo... i feel veryyy shaky and crazy hungry.
how one person explained it to me is...lets say your sugar is 110 which is fine and goes down to 80...its not tech low...but the dip in the numbers can make you feel hungry and low blood sugary.
i hope you feel better !

A fast drop always makes me feel a little light-headed. Even going from 200 to 150 very quickly makes me feel like I have low blood sugar.
Hope everything turns out to be minor....

Re: Low blood sugar?
I have low blood sugar.
When I had a glucose tolerance test about 3 years ago, by the time it was over my sugar was down in the 50's.
I just have to make sure I eat every couple of hours. I also keep glucose tabs or candy in the car "just in case".
I will admit though, I shouldn't be drinking coffee or eating so many carbs. I'm working on the carbs, but the coffee has been tough...

Re: Low blood sugar?
This past monday I woke up feeling sick. I walked into the bathroom and washed my face - I was sweaty and just didnt feel right. I sat down for a little while on the floor in the bathroom and then decided to go back to bed. I walked into the bedroom - blacked out and hit my head and side of my body on the Hard wood floor. I woke up and called Danielle to tell her she needed to come home to take care of the baby. We called the doc but they said to go to the ER. So at the hospital - they took blood, did a cat scan of my head, and a chest xray. They didnt find anything. They told me that my blood sugar was low. I have been on Atkins for the past few months and I lost 17 pounds. They told me that I can no longer do Atkins. I had a huge bump on my head and my side is really sore. I have to make an appt with my regular doctor for a full work up to see what is going on. Today at work I was really light headed. Dont know why

Re: Low blood sugar?
Scott, I hope you are ok. Yes, it felt scary to feel lightheaded and dizzy. Almost like I coudn't concentrate on breathing. I was sweaty and clammy.
I hope that's all it was.

Re: Low blood sugar?
A guy I use to work with starting doing the Atkins diet - this was like in 2000 - and he lost weight - he was thin to begin with...but he actually ended up bringing on diabetes from doing the diet. He could have been pre-diabetic before - don't know - but the story was - Atkins diet resulted in insulin shots...
Low blood sugar is tough. I will go for a coke, or pasta, snicker bar (peanuts/protein) ...but you need to back it up w/ protien to help keep the sugar up and not fall so fast -
Stress can bring it on too, or hormone dips/changes in the ladies.

Re: Low blood sugar?
I suffer from Hypoglycemia. I know all too well about low blood sugar. I need to stay above 100 at all times or I drop really fast. I have ended up in the ER twice from going down into the 40's. Happened at work after I told my boss I needed 5 minutes to get a drink. I know that as soon as I start to feel off, to check my sugar. Clammy hands, nausea, light headed are all classic symptoms. I try to eat high protein snacks when I am doing strenuous work or am on my feet for a long time. OJ or apple juice is good. I also carry a supply of glucose tablets. The paste is nasty. They make a liquid now too. I avoid large amounts of water and diet drinks as they bring it down fast for me. I have had it for at least 15 years. I can't remember the last time I went really low that I passed out...
