What do we need for a new puppy?
We haven't decided if we will be adopting or going through a breeder.
I know that we will need the obvious- dog food, bed, collar, leash, toys.
What do I need as far as medical stuff? Do all dogs need heart worm and flea and tick medications? What about vet visits? Do you go yearly, a few times a year?
As far as a crate. Is that the best way to train a dog?
We live in Northport. Can anyone recommend a Vet and groomer in the general area? How much do check ups cost? As far as grooming, people have been telling me about $50 for a small dog. Sound about right?
Anything else I am forgetting?
Thanks:)

I will answer what I can.
Your dog will need a monthly worm medication, and I highly suggest monthly flea and tick treatments (esp for North Shore areas). My dogs recently got fleas up at Northport Park but since I have them on a monthly flea product, the fleas died before infesting my house and pets. They can get them anywhere, esp with wildlife running through the yards.
Check ups...not sure what they cost b/c I bring my 2 dogs and I always just pay...I never really think about the amt. If your dog is healthy, then once a year they go for shots (rabies, etc). You should def bring ANY pet you get, no matter from where, to the vet for a first time check up and also your vet will guide you re flea and heartworm meds. Puppies under a certain age/weight cannot use certain worm meds or flea meds, etc.
Crate training is best IMO. Thats a whole different thread, lol. I persnally dont recommend wee wee pad training...hard to break the habit with that.
I dont have a groomer or vet local to you to suggest. I did once try Grooming- dales and have no plans to go back. Most grommers do charge about 40-50 to groom your dog, depends on breed how often they NEED to go.
Anything else ask away.

If you live in the Northport area, I recommend Commack Animal Hospital across from Best Buy on Jericho for a vet. They are wonderful there...

2 vets I like are
Dr. Luckow in the IGA shopping center in Fort Salonga, Office is called Fort Salonga Animal Hospital. Small office, just him & staff.
Love Dr. Gurtman at the Townline Veterinary Group in Hauppauge. There's another Dr there too, she's very nice. Located on Vets right after 347/454 forks in the same shopping center as Five Guys.
Lots of puppies up for adoption by the way, just have to look a bit. A LOT cheaper (nearly free, compared to breeder) & you'd be saving a life Good luck!!
