Corrective eye surgery on a toddler

My one DD has a lazy eye and has been seing Dr. Kronwith in Mineola since she was 6 months old...she will be 2 in July and with the patching it has not gotten better and the Dr want to do corrective surgery where there is 80% chance of it totally fixing the lazy eye....I dont know what to do...DH does not want it done...I feel it needs to be corrected and the Dr said its better to do while she is young. Has anyone gone thru this?? I am just looking for some guidance here....TIA ETA: Sorry I hit enter to fast. I am going to for second opinion does anyone know of a Dr in Nassau out of LIJ or NSUH???

How about a second opinion? Dr. Cossari in Port Jefferson did corrective surgery on my brother when he was an infant. Dr. Cossari is considered one of the best pediatric specialists in his field.

What are the risks? If you are going to do it, I would definatley do it now and not wait. A little boy on Matteo's t-ball team just had his surgically corrected and the mother said the recovery has been awful and she wishes she had done it when he was smaller. She didn't get into why though. If I see her on Saturday, I'll ask her some more about it if you want.

Crashing here but I had the same type of surgery done when I was two. I honestly dont remember a thing and Im so glad my parents did it when they did. The surgery held great and at 29 I still have no issues with lazy eye.

have you tried vision therapy?
pediatric optometrists work on strengthening the muscles in the eyes and getting the eyes to converge properly

I had it done when I was 8, and have some traumatic memories of the day. It probably would have been better if had been done when I was younger so I wouldn't remember it.

My son had it done in september. He was 3.5. We had tried the patch first and felt it needed to be done. We see dr roberts in plainview. We are so happy we did it. Recovery was not bad at all.

My daughter just had this surgery about 3 weeks ago. She will be 3 next month. After 2 days she was back to her old self and her eyes look great. It is a full two week recovery process in that she couldn't get dirt in her eyes or go swimming. Swimming wasn't an issue, but we did keep her inside for about two weeks and then really monitored her outside.

I really feel that she can even see so much better. We used Dr. Levi in Plainview, but we did get a second opinion from Dr. Pinchoff in Great Neck, who had agreed the next step for her was definitely surgery (the patch didn't work). I'm so glad we did it and I don't think she remembers it at all.

Re: Corrective eye surgery on a toddler

Thanks for the responses... The patch isnt working at all and the Dr I use now doesnt feel anything will work besides surgery. I will look up these other Drs you have mentioned. I want to get this over ASAP while she is young but DH is fighting me on this.... I had a lazy eye when I was a kids but its wasnt bad and I went for the therapy and it corrected itself....DH, SIL and MIL all have really bad lazy eyes and never did anything about it.... I know its minor and I should be happy I have 3 healthy kids but I dont want my DD to have to deal with her eye and people saying stuff to her....its bad and I notice it in every pic I take of her....I am just so stressed out with so much going on right now this just added to things. Thanks for the responses I am going to be making some phone calls tomorrow.... Have a great nite everyone.

Re: Corrective eye surgery on a toddler

Dr Kronwith did surgery2 surgeries on my dd. !st one was done at about 9months and a second one was need a year later. she actually needed additionally surgery but we decided to hold off because she needed tonsil, adnoids and tubes at 5 years old. we had surgery scheduled with dr kronwith twice but cancelled both times. then she started getting older and we decided to wait till she decided she wanted it. She started getting made fun of at around 10 finally at 13 she wanted it done and it was a tough surgery but 3 years later her eyes are still perfect. for this last surgery we went to Dr. Campalatarro in Manhattan he is terrific! surgery is done atNY eye and ear and it was an easy experience. I don't know if i had gone to him first if we would have needed so much surgery but he did do the job perfectly.
