Re: Feed on demand or by schedule?

DD is 13 weeks old and we did/do both on demand and on a schedule. I try not to let her go more than 3-3 1/2 hours during the day unless she is napping. Before she was STTN I just fed her when she would wake up.

Totally feed on schedule during the day and on demand at night.
DD is a year old now - we did this for her and she was STTN by 8 weeks old...by 12 weeks she was going a straight 12 hours at night. I sort of don't understand why people don't try and feed on a schedule...it works.
We did every 4 hours during the day - she took a lot at one feeding though. I know many babies can't seem to go past 3 hours though. 4 hours worked great for us - it's what they were doing for her in the hospital when she was born so we just continued it at home. If she was getting hungry sooner than 4 hours - we knew to up her bottles so she could go the longer stretch.

Re: Feed on demand or by schedule?

DS is a month old and only formula fed. We are doing a combo of both I guess. I try to keep to a 4 hour schedule during the day unless he cries for food earlier. But it's got to be at least 3 hours.

I'm kind of confused about what to do at night though because the past few nights I've overslept and let him go 6 hours between feedings, but I've only fed him because the ped said not to go more than 5 hours at night, but he's not crying for food. So I'm not sure if I should just let him sleep and see how long he goes or continue waking him to feed him?

I would NOT wake him to feed at night. If he wants to sleep - let him. Then you get sleep too! 5-6 hours at a month old is normal and great. I believe this is how they learn to sleep longer stretches at night - when you don't wake them. If you keep waking them...they will get used to that and always want to wake to be fed.

My Chat Icon Chat Icon are on a three hour schedule during the day and on demand at night. If one of them wakes up to be fed at night, I'll wake the other one up that way their schedule isn't thrown off during the day. They are three weeks old.

We fed on demand. Ds was a chow. He was eating like every hour. Had I waited a certain amout of hours we all would have been miserable.

ditto with both kids...

people complain that i feed them too much, bc they are/were robust and very healthy. Interestingly, I am getting complaints now that my son looks too skinny and should feed him more. This is a boy who will eat 2 adult slices of pizza and a vegetable for a meal.Chat Icon

oh...and never wake a sleeping baby.

On demand. It became a pretty predictable schedule though... every 2-3 hrs.... At night, I always fed on demand, which was sometimes more often than I'd like it to be! Chat Icon

On demand, they each worked themselves into a schedule after a few weeks.

Thanks, this makes total sense. So do I wait til he's actually crying or just get him when he starts to make a little noise?

I would wait to see if after he makes a little noise he goes back to sleep. DD is 13 weeks old and she makes a ton of noises!!! If I went to her everytime she made a noise neither one of us would get any sleep.

Only on demand. We have never woken DS. Ped said not to wake as long as he kept gaining weight.
