Do you feed your newborn on demand or do you have a set schedule.

My DS is always hungry and my ped. told me to do it on demand and I was just wondering if a lot more moms do this also. Sometimes he is looking for food after an hour. I try and feed him more but sometimes it seems as though he doesnt want anymore.

On demand. However, by 4-5 weeks, DD had pretty much put herself on a schedule.

Always on demand. He only ate 3oz at a time til he was 10 MONTHS old, so I fed him a lot. Even when we tried to give him more in a sitting, he wouldn't.

DS is 4 months and it's still pretty much on demand (although there is a basic schedule). He also eats often and for long stretches at a time. There are days when he eats every 2 hours for an hour at a pop Chat Icon

It can be tough in the beginning because you feel like all you do is nurse, but it gets better. Even if the baby isn'y fully nursing and just nibbling, the comfort of being at the breast is good for them Chat Icon

We always had to do on schedule because DS would want a bottle all the time, literally he would eat 6oz and then be crying for more only an hour later. He hated the paci and was using his bottle as a comfort item (this was from nearly day 1)
So we had to feed no more than every 3 hours as DS was eating SOOO much

PS he was FF.

Re: Do you feed your newborn on demand or do you have a set schedule.

On demand for the 1st 2 weeks then after 2 weeks I put the baby on a 3 hour schedule-it's usually 8am, 11am, 2pm, 5 pm, 8pm then BED and feedings at night with my last feedig usually being 5 am to start the routine again at 8 am. Obviously the more milk during the day the less the baby wakes up at night so the middle of the night feeding vanish to minimum to none.

It doesn't work out that way every day but most days it does.

How did you keep him from crying all those other hours looking for his comfort bottle? just wondering... DD is BF and likes to nurse for comfort.. I started pumping and feeding because it just works better for me... and now she is using the bottle as a comfort item... and she refuses a pacifier

I feed on demand-- which happens to be around every 2 hours, more or less. She is 12 weeks old.

DH keeps telling me I can "stretch it"... but, when she fusses and I check and she ACTS hungry, I am not going to NOT feed her just to see if she is "faking" Chat Icon.

I would love for her eating to be less frequent, but I just let her take the lead.

same here. Her schedule is usually every 2 1/2 - 3 hours during the day. At night she sleeps for 5 1/2 hours, wakes up to eat, goes right back to sleep for another 3-4 hours. There have been some days that she ate every hour or so (cluster feeding).

It was alot of walking with him, rocking him, trying different things to make him happy (swing, bouncy, toys, etc)
He loved white noise so static and running water helped alot. And some days if he was crying bad and I could tell he was upset, I would give in and give him a small bottle around the 2.5 hour mark. Luckily DS is easily distracted and never just cried the whole time

When she was first home I did it every 3 hrs because she was tiny. Then I switched to on demand.

DD was fed on demand until 8 months. Then I tried in formulate a schedule. It took a firm grasp around 10 months and continues in almost the same form today at 17 months.
