EBF moms - feed on demand or schedule?
Wondering what you ladies do. And if you do feed on a schedule, what is it like?
TIA

Demand until she had been eating solids 3x per day for 3 months - then it became something resembling a schedule.

On demand. If you are on a schedule, what do you do when DC is hungry but it isn't a scheduled feeding time?

This is what I do as well, although even though DS is 9 months, there are stills days (or even a week) when he is totally off schedule.

I never even thought to do scheduled for a long time....it was on demand for the first 8 months or so.

Re: EBF moms - feed on demand or schedule?
On demand.. but, he is kind of making a schedule since I have been back to work.
6 am 8am
Then two bottles of Bm and one cereal at daycare..
Nurse at 4pm when we get home and then on demand for the rest of the night. But, it is kind of turning into cereal and fruit at 5- 5:30.. one more nursing and then bedtime.. One nursing in the middle of the night. Sometimes he is hungry and cluster feeds until bed time.

Re: EBF moms - feed on demand or schedule?
I guess I'm just having a hard time figuring my kid out...I wonder if I feed her too often if you can believe that. I almost never see her very hungry...I think we just got into the habit of 2-3 hours between feedings. Now we're getting into the habit of using BF to go to sleep! It just seems like no matter how long she naps (sometimes only a half hour), it's sleep, wake up, play, eat, repeat...

How old is your DD? My DS is 8 weeks and this is his routine as well. I think it's pretty typical for EBF newborns. Sometimes my little guy wants to eat every hour. I don't think he really wants to eat every time, just use me as a pacifier.

That sounds pretty normal, my DS ate every 2-3 hours (except at night) until he was on solid foods.
If you can I would try to break the habit of nursing to sleep, DS did that and I ended up having to nurse him to sleep until he was 6 months old (which makes it really hard to get a night out!)and then we had to work to change it.

Yeah, this is basically what babies do for the first year of life. Of course, the sleep gets less as they get older. At 6 months old, DD's feedings have gotten more predictable - approx every 3 hrs

Re: EBF moms - feed on demand or schedule?
I fed formula on demand and would have done the same if I could BF. I know it would have been extremely difficult but I'm 100% sold on the idea of on demand feeding for babies.

For a year: on demand.
In fact, he is still on demand at 2 years. He's just not BF anymore.

Re: EBF moms - feed on demand or schedule?
It has always been on demand. Although as he got older, he developed his own schedule. However, there are days still at 11 months where all he wants to do is eat.

Re: EBF moms - feed on demand or schedule?
On demand for us. DS is almost 3 months and feeds every two hours, sometimes three. He's in bed by 9pm and sleeps until 6am. I pump an hour after first feeding to build a freezer stash for DH feedings and such. He takes good naps and gets in one good 2 hour nap, midday.
Like a new mom dope, I get suckered into listening to other moms and tried a few different things here and there but it does not work for us. We're back on our own track that works extremely well for us. I'm not taking advice anymore from anyone but my ped.
Every mommy/baby team is different. And it's an always changing thing.

Re: EBF moms - feed on demand or schedule?
On demand....they are pretty much on demand for many months when they are BF. Don't worry that you're feeding her too much, if she's taking it then she's hungry. Also, you can't overfeed a breastfed baby.

That's exactly what she's using me as. She's 12 weeks. It was so evident to me last night, when I BFed her to sleep, she seemed to be asleep, I took her off and she was clamoring to get back on! And yet she won't take a pacifier
Thanks everyone!

Re: EBF moms - feed on demand or schedule?
Right now I feed on demand but don't let her go longer than 3 hours without eating (day or night). Her ped won't let me go longer than that because she hasn't reached her birthweight yet...she's almost there but not quite!

On Demand. Scheduled feedings were a big thing in the 70's. I don't understand why you would force your child to wait for food.
