What are the best beaches in LI?
When we moved here year, it was the end of the summer. This year I'm hoping to enjoy some beach time! What beaches are the cleanest, and have the nicest water (clean, not rocky, etc)? Are there fees associated with going?
Thanks!

not sure where ya live but my whole family every weekend goes to Cupsouge beach in Westhampton. Its off Dune Rd. They charge for parking 12$ per car but you can get a green pass card for $24 for the season and it cuts parking to 5$ per visit and it allows you into other beaches on the island. Its a nice beach with clean water and nice smooth sand.....I would def rec. trying it out!

Re: What are the best beaches in LI?
Typically, beaches on the north shore are more rocky and beaches on the south shore are more sandy, if that helps you at all. I go to the Babylon beaches because I live less than 10 mins away from them...usually Gilgo

We like Lido West. Not a long walk to the water. Clean. Has a bathroom and snack bar. Not sure where you live.
TOH resident is $7.50 a car.

Beth, a vast majority of LI beaches are "town" beaches meaning you have to live in the township to access the beach. There are state beaches (like Robert Moses and Sunken Meadow) which charge a daily fee without regard to residency. For the town beaches that allow out of town residents access, the fee is generally higher than either Robert Moses or Sunken Meadow, so there's no point.

Jones Beach is also a state park & open to the general public. Parking is $10, I think.

Oh wow, I had no idea about town beaches! Thanks for the heads up. How is Jones Beach? Is it nice?

Re: What are the best beaches in LI?
my personal opinion is to go to Robert Moses over Jones. It's just a little bit further - "same" beach (almost), but you don't have to walk as far and it's a bit smaller. (you will have teenagers, but not the obnoxious number that are on Jones)

ITA.
If you plan on going a few times, it's worth it to buy the Empire Passport for $65 (instead of $10 per visit).
Long Beach is nice as well but, it's more difficult to park - you can take the train there though. It's $12 for a day.

Rockaway Beach. I would probably pick a street above 125th. During the week you can park on the street (not the beach block but next block up).
On the weekends you cannot park on the street in the 120's and up (which are the less crowded nicer beaches) so unless you know someone and can use their driveway you are SOL.
But if you can go during the week the beach is beautiful, quiet, like a private beach!
It is a city beach so it is free, but you would never guess bc it is so nice lol!

I agree...I hate Jones Beach. I think its filthy...and the crowds are unbearable.
I prefer Long Beach - I live in Queens as well. You have to pay to get on but its worth it to not have to listen to obnoxious juice heads and techno music the entire time - unless you can handle the likes of the Jersey Shore cast.
There is no parking - street parking only, but its not too bad finding a spot.

I like Jones but its closest to me so its why I always go there. there are many fields at Jones. 6 is the closest walk to the beach, 4 is the longest walk but very nice boardwalk - nice walk from parking lot to boardwalk-lots flowers planted etc. Remember all the stuff you may bring to the beach - chairs, cooler etc -long walk-lots of stuff plus the sand is a long walk to the water- and sand is hard to walk on! Buses will take you straight to 4's boardwalk.
5 is a bay which is cute - lots fish and shells- good for tiny kids -no waves.
I like 6 best but never get there early enough for parking. Even yesterday-a week day I was there around 11:30 and still too late- it was filled.

Well, actually my DH needs to use some of his days off, so I was thinking of going during the week.

I love Smith Point. Clean, nice. There's a nice tiki bar/snack bar place, they have a beautiful TWA Flight 800 Tribute there, and there's typically a band that plays in the early evenings.

Agreed... We've been going with DH's family once a week...we barbeque, the kids play on the big playground, then we splash around in the water for a while....it's not too crowded and it's clean! And if you go after 5pm, there is no fee!

Re: What are the best beaches in LI?
DH and I call Field 6 the normal beach
I do like riding my bike to the beach and handing out at Zachs Bay just b/c it's quiet and my legs are like rubber when I get there. We bought a little folding tent for the beach so we don't have to rent umbrellas...it can go in our backpack.
