Re: Anesthesia & D&C

yes i had anesthesia, i assume like they would give for any other kind of operation. i've never had anything else. they put me up on the table, the doctor was talking to me about FB and the next thing, i was in the recovery room.

Re: Anesthesia & D&C

I was put under general anesthesia for the first time last year for my d&e and I was SCARED OUT OF MY MIND beforehand because I hated the idea of being put to sleep!! At the time I would have much rather had a spinal and been able to stay awake even!! Chat Icon

However...........

I realized after it was not a big deal AT ALL And the worst part is the anticipation and of course the emotional aspect!! Chat Icon After my d&e and d&c, I woke up in recovery and felt groggy and out of it .. but after you have some juice/water and some cookies, you start to feel better... you get up and use the bathroom.. and then you're good to go, once the hospital releases you. Typically there are two recovery rooms (the one you go to right after the procedure and then the one before you get discharged)

Chat Icon Chat Icon FM with any questions!! I've had to go through it twice.

Re: Anesthesia & D&C

I had it as well and the only thing I didn't like was that they gave me something before they put me out to "relax" me - or so they said - but all it did was make me really dizzy, and I was still crying and everyone was being so nice to me, but I didn't like the way I felt at all. I don't think they always give this though so it may not apply to everyone.

Then the anesthesiologist said he was giving me the medicine to put me to sleep and I'd feel a slight burn in my arm and that's the last thing I remember. So the dizzy feeling was short lived and when I woke up I was tired and groggy at first but once they moved me from the post-anesthesia recovery room to the regular one I felt fine really.

Honestly the surgery experience was the easy part despite the fact that I was so terrified of it beforehand. I recovered physically very well and very quickly - however it had been distracting me from the emotional stuff, which was much harder to deal with for me.

Re: Anesthesia & D&C

They gave me general anesthesia but before they whisked me off to the OR they sedated me a little. While I said my goodbye to my husband they put something in my IV to relax me and I don't remember anything after that. My DH said I was crying and then all of a sudden I went blank.

I've had surgery before so I was going to ask for something to calm me down beforehand but I was so upset that they offered it without me having to ask.

Re: Anesthesia & D&C

The D&C is more of a emotional pain -- at least it was for me.

It really is not a bad or painful procedure. I had mine done at the hospital (guess some are done in the dr office) --- they took some blood, then they started me on an IV for fluids, right before they took me in they gave me a drug (through IV) that would make me feel a little sleepy. They let my husband walk with the nurse and my hospital bed down the hallway to the operating room. Once I was there they gave me more drugs in the IV and a mask over my face....

I woke up when it was all done in the recovery room and felt fine. They asked if I had any pain and I did not. If I did they would have given me pain medicine. After staying in recover for 15-20 mins they took me back to the room. I had some ginger ale through a straw and felt fine (sad but nothing hurt). The nurse told me as soon as I could pee that we could go. So I drank my ginger ale as fast as I could, went into the bathroom and peed and got dressed. I was bleeding a little bit (wore the hospital pad the first night), the next week I wore pany liners because I would spot here and there.
