Just how bad is it to get a wisdom tooth pulled without anesthesia?

I'm debating whether or not to get "put out" for getting my wisdom tooth extracted. It's not impacted, but it is decayed. Anyone have experience with this?

I've only had my teeth pulled with novocain. I was/am too nervous to be put out.

I'm not going to lie...it hurts and you HEAR everything which sometimes can be worse than the pain.

But I know you don't like the dentist, so if I were you I would go with the anesthesia.

I don't know Sorry. I had all 4 of mine out at one time and there was no way in helllll i was not being "put out"

I had 1 pulled with novocain only - mine wasn't impacted either. it was scraping the inside of my cheek and my dentist wanted it out asap.

it was fine. i mean it sucked for a while after - no solid food for 2 days. but it wasn't too painful.

my Mom had 2 pulled last Friday w/just novocain and she was fine.

I did it ONCE!! I threw up on the dentist and passed out. I have a silly fear of the dentist. I heard the tooth squeeking out and tossed my cookies. I would rather pay out of pocket ANYDAY and get knocked out. With out a doubt.

I got 2 wisdom teeth extracted and I was "put it". I didn't like the fact that I was asleep and I felt like crap afterwards so when I went to get the other two out I stayed awake and just had novacane. It was not that bad at all. It was very quick and it was not that painful at all...nothing a few painkillers could not fix afterwards. Just be careful though I ended up with a dry socket a few days later and that is so much more painful than the extraction itself. Be careful not to dislodge the clot (sorry, gross, I know!) Good luck with whichever choice you make!

I've never been put out for any dental procedure! Even when I had the titanium screw drilled into my jawbone for my implant...

I would just use the novociane and get it out 1-2-3. You can even listen to your ipod if you think noise will be a deterrant. If your dentist is any good like mine, when they pull that tooth, you'll be asking when they will start, and he will laugh at you and show you the tooth he already pulled

I had one with just novicaine and was put out for the next 2.

If you have issues with the dentist (I think that was you from the other day) I would advise against it.

The pain is the same with and without; its more a matter of if you're not knocked out, you know more of what is happening, you see the tools and hear the noises.

If you're afraid of just GOING to the dentist, you don't want to hear and see what happens when they do an extraction.

I would definitely opt to get knocked out.

I've had 5 teeth (baby teeth) pulled using novacaine. While I'm sure it's better now, hearing the noises, feeling the tugging (although not feeling the pain) is still not fun - especially if you're afraid of the dentist.

i got mine pulled with novacain, it was pulled b/c there just was not enough room in my mouth. I heard everything, which still gives me the chills and turns my stomach, but the pain was not too horrible. I just closed my eyes & held on tight. it was quick though, thank god! good luck

With the anesthesia, you literally drift off and wake up, what feels like 1 minute later. It's IV sedation and not bad at all! I would much rather not see and hear what they are doing in there!!

I had 2 wisodom teeth out. The last one I had out was with novacaine, it was so easy and out in 5 minutes. It was not bad at all. I kept my eyes closed, and they sang to me so I did not hear anything. HTH I am a big baby when it comes to these things.

I had mine out with just novacaine.
I did hear it.
It went so quick though and honestly the "recovery" was so much better than when I had been put out to have another one removed (impacted).
My DH took me and when I came out to the waiting room he was like "that's it?"..LOL.
I "think" some people bring ipods with them to help drown out the noise.

I had all four out at the same time with just novacaine, it wasn't bad at all. I wasn't sure about getting all of them out at once, so he did one side, and I felt barely anything, just some tugging/pressure. I told him go ahead and do the other side. He didn't let the novacaine "sit" for as long, so it was I felt a little more than the first side, but it w as just uncomfortable, nothing unbearable.
I was able to drive myself home shortly after they were all out. For me the worst part was the bleeding afterwards, I didn't realize they would keep bleeding for so long. The pain afterwards wasn't horrible either. They gave me a script for vicodin, but it made me feel freaky, so I used prescription advil instead, and that was just fine.

Thank you everyone! I opted to get knocked out and get the 2 of them removed - one hurts right now, the other doesn't but the dentist suggested getting the 2nd one extracted while they were in there because it's just a matter of time till that tooth goes too.

I'm feeling all pumped up and brave today because I went to the dentist yesterday and didn't find it so bad, but it would be a stupid move on my part to attempt to be awake for this - I don't need to be THAT brave!!!!

Thursday a.m. is my big moment.

I had one top one out and a top molar on the same side with only novacain.
You dont' feel a thing- just pressure and tugging and pulling.
It wasn't pleasant-because of the noises and the cracking sounds and the pulling... but it was painless...
The needles hurt the most...they had to shoot from all sides- underneath the tooth, behind it- OUCH!
After that it was fine...
I had no pain at all afterwards- just some soreness...took nothing stronger than Advil and went to work the next day.
I would only get my teeth out with novacine- I refuse to be put under- that worries me more than anything else involved... but that's just me- I need to be in control at all times...

I was put out years ago. I woke up a maniac...lol I had it done without and it wasn't terrible. I didn't feel a thing while they were doing it after it hurt but I liked my experience so much better without being put out

I had 2 done with sweet air....it was literally over in less than 2 minutes. It wasn't as bad as I thought at all. I went in there telling them I was going to be put out, but when they said it would take 1/2 hour - by the time they put you out and you woke up, I decided against it.

I've only had my top ones extracted because my bottom ones are impacted and too close to the nerve. My dentist, orthodontist and the oral surgeon who did the top 2 all said to NOT touch the bottom ones unless they have to come out (infection etc.)

The top ones I wasn't put out, I just got the stuff to make you numb. It was a little irritating when my mouth went numb (strnger than just what they give you for a filling) but other than that I didnt feel anything. I had my ipod on so I wouldn't hear anything and they were out in less than 2 minutes.

I had all 4 wisdom teeth and two molars pulled with nothing but Novicane and was fine. I guess it depends on how well you can handle it. Its not so painful as just awkward etc.
