Live on the water? How are you preparing?
Are you waterfront or close to? What precautions are you taking?

Re: Live on the water? How are you preparing?
We live a half block from the Great South Bay, probably even closer than that. That being said, SOMEHOW we're not in a flood zone Our house's foundation is highly elevated and while we have a basement, it's purely functional for the washer/dryer/burner and all of those are high up on concrete slabs and we have a sump pump and french drain system. That being said, our basement WILL flood. It always does, and we're well aware of that. It's the ground water that comes in. We're preparing more for the wind than the water, actually, but we will be heading to my mom and dad's instead of weathering out the storm here. Basically we just put everything into the garage, made sure the pump was working in the basement, cleaned up any stray things on the floor down there and will shut our storm windows and hope for the best.

Yes and none. Aren't I just the laziest? If it gets hairy, I plan on fleeing, just like I would in battle.

My parents live on the bay- they are having all their awnings taken down. I'm not sure what else they are doing but my father is adamant about not leaving.

Re: Live on the water? How are you preparing?
we are waterfront in Long beach. 2nd floor of an apartment building. We are kinda waiting since the storm is still a couple days away. But we will tape our windows if needed. And go to the in laws saturday if it still looks bad. We did buy botteled water already. If we leave I'll prbably move stuff away from the windows just incase. And put anything inportant in our closet or in the bathrooms - none of those have windows.

I don't but, my friend and her GF do and they have no clue. So we went to HD today and got wood for the windows. Other than that she is putting all of her outside stuff away.

Im in Broad Channel...
just in case you do decide to evacuate... Eric Ulrich just posted this on FB..
UPDATE: Although a mandatory evacuation order has not been issued, residents living in Zone "A" evacuation areas — areas of the city that are most likely to be significantly impacted by Hurricane Irene — i.e. Breezy Point, Broad Channel, and portions of Far Rockaway — Be advised that JOHN ADAMS HIGH SCHOOL (101-02 Rockaway Blvd. in Ozone Park) is your new evacuation center. Aqueduct Racetrack is no longer a OEM designated center. When and if an order is issued, John Adams HS is the place to go

Re: Live on the water? How are you preparing?
I have the bay on one side of me and a canal in my backyard. Other than bringing in all the outdoor furniture, there's nothing else that I can do. If it floods it floods.

Re: Live on the water? How are you preparing?
South Shore Suffolk, less than a mile from the ocean, with the bay about 1/2 mile south. We are battened down outside, got anything important off the basement floor and are heading inland to a hotel off the LIE Sat-Mon. I have an infant and do not want to have to worry about a last minute evac with her. I lived near here when Gloria hit and this area was evacuated then due to flooding. Better to be safe than sorry, I am taking care of my baby first and foremost.
