Possible Problem with LO sorry so long!

Hey everyone,
So I am trying to decide if I am insane or just a worried mom or do I have something to worry about.

My son is 15 months. He barely has any speech. He said Dadda early and Hey then he said Hitty (Kitty) and sort of momma... He then started saying Mom after he was a year old and watthat (whats that and points). However instead of his speech getting better all he says is NANANA all the time. He says Whatthat sometimes now but all the other words are gone. Where did they go?

He points and says NANA he yells NANA when he sees a kid run by. He throws his hands up and down like he is talking but he just grunts and says NANA.

He just started pointing after his first birthday and has a problem with foods. He will play with foods and pick them up but we had a hard time getting him to try new food. He even used to gag with new puree foods and sometimes throw up. He points to the sky when you say where is the airplane. He points to his head. He also knows where his belly is. and the lights.

I get sick thinking that something is possibly wrong. I know he is healthy and I should be thankful but I keep hoping that he is just a late talker.

We went to a feeding specialist and after 3 visits she said that we were on our way and didn't really need her anymore cause he was trying new things. He is trying more things but I can't get him to put a veg or fruit in his mouth everything goes over the highchair. (he just put a carrot in his mouth today)

Should I be seeking help? Am I overreacting?
(My son was on a delayed vaccine schedule after getting his first DTAP and had blood in his stool (supposed dairy allergy).
Any advice or ideas? Thanks.

As parents, we are just filled with worry.

While I can't take away the worry that you have, I can tell you that both my DS and DD hardly had any words until they were about 17-18 months old. Around 18 months was when they both really started saying new words on a daily basis. You can always talk to your pediatrician about your concerns, but based on my experience, I would not be concerned about what you are describing right now.

I am in no way an expert on this issue, but simply judging from my own experience as a mom of a boy, I can tell you that my son did not start talking until he was 2 years old. He knew 10, maybe 15 words, understood absolutely everything but didn't talk. Then at 2 it was like a floodgate opened up! Based on what other boy moms tell me, most male children are late talkers.

Here's my experience. I have 6 boys. 3 that are typical, 1 with Autism (6 yrs.old) 1 with PDD (3 years old) and a one year old who I'm on top of every second because my biggest fear of the light going off Anyway's pointing is great, my guys with ASD never pointed. Having word(s) also a plus. Reading you post he seems to understand basic things which is great. Early signs that I noticed was fixated with toys, weird finger movements, poor eye contact (big one), lack of language, delayed walking, crawling-etc., those were some of the things that I noticed early on. My best advice is talk to your Pedi and see what they say. Maybe it's just a delay, some kids just need an extra push to get motivated. Sometimes we as Mom do to much for them and that sets them back. (I am infamous for that one) Try not to worry it sounds like he's on the right track

If you are really worried, then call Early Intervention. They will come to your home, evaluate him and either offer services for him or tell you that he is perfectly fine and not to worry. It costs you nothing, and it will either bring you peace of mind or will confirm your suspicions.

At 15 months, it's not unusual for children to have few or no words, and as long as they are pointing and make efforts to communicate those are good signs. I would talk to your pediatrician though, and perhaps do an audiological exam for hearing--even if DCs hearing seems fine, it's good to get it checked and rule that out. You could call EI, though I honestly don't know if they would do much until 18 months, unless you have other concerns.

My DS had a few words around a year. Then he lost them. He did point and appeared to hear us, made guttural sounds to communicate his needs, so no one was very concerned. At 21 months I had him assessed through EI, and he started speech therapy soon after and picked up speech quickly.
