Tongue Tie?

Anyone's children have this? I had a lactation consultant come yesterday, and she saw that my 2 week old boys have a pronounced tongue tie. I'm going to bring it up with pediatrician next week. I'm just so confused about what I should do. I have it too, and my husband has it also and he had speech therapy when he was younger. Are there any risks with clipping it? I know if we do it early, it's better, just nervous about doing it. Any advice? Also any recommendations for who you used to do the clipping? Thanks!

Re: Tongue Tie?

my son had it and we had it taken care of immediately probably around the 2 week mark because he wasn't gaining enough weight.

It wasn't that bad at all! He was done in a few seconds. We left the room and the doctor and nurse took care of it... there was just the tiniest drop of blood, we immediately gave him a bottle and he was 100% fine within seconds.

I would suggest doing it now. He will NEVER remember it, IMHO, he will be better off if you nip it in the bud now (no pun intended) Chat Icon

Good luck - and I promise - the anticipation and nerves are much worse for the parents... they have NO clue what's going on! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Tongue Tie?

my DD was tongue tied also. The LC consultant noticed it first. She had trouble latching from the start (no trouble with a bottle). I used a nipple shield which helped alot but I was still in pain bc she wasn't latching properly. My biggest concern was that it could cause speech issues down the road. If you do the snipping early on it is done in the office, a quick and simple procedure. If you wait ( I believe after 1 year) they will anesthesia and it is much more involved.

We decided to do it at 3 months old. It was the best decision ever. She cried a little there and by the time we got home she was fine...and was nursing like a champ!!

Re: Tongue Tie?

DS has this. The ped tried to put it off, but we went right to the ENT and pushed to have it snipped. It was the best decision! Get it done sooner rather than later!

Do it now. Ds was able to feed fine, so we just found out about it this year at 4. He has speech and even eating issues bc of it. We are freaking out about the general anesthesia. As an infant they don't need general.

Re: Tongue Tie?

My son had his done when he had tubes put in his ears. He never had a feeding problem but I did not want to wait until he had a speech problem to do something about it. He was 9 months when we did it.
