Anyone's baby have a tongue tie?
The pediatrician told me that Emmi (4 months) has a tongue tie and it will most likely need to be clipped. She hasnt had any problem with breast feeding, but we're seeing an ENT tomorrow.
I've heard getting it clipped is no big deal, but are there any BTDT moms who could reassure me?
Thanks!

Re: Anyone's baby have a tongue tie?
DS was born with this. His did not affect his BFing either, he BFed like a champ. He did get it clipped at a year though and if I can share my personal experience, if your DD has no teeth yet, I'd see if she can get it clipped sooner than later. DS had to be put under to have it done since at a year he had a mouth full of teeth and was way too mobile. Your DD might still be young enough to have it done as an in-office procedure. Surgery isn't a big deal, but I would have rather he had it done when he was a newborn, in-office (it's a super quick procedure) had my drs thought more of it. That's if you want to get it clipped at all. Though there is no guarantee it will affect speech, I didn't want to take the chance. Feel free to ask me any questions!

Re: Anyone's baby have a tongue tie?
We had DS's clipped also.
The Ped wanted us to wait and see how it was when he was older. It did not affect his eating, but you could tell it just wasn't right. So DH and I decided to have the ENT just do the procedure.
When DH was little, he had this and his mom broke his when trying to feed him. It bled like crazy and his mom freaked about it. So, we wanted to avoid that kind of situation and have it clipped under the care of a doctor.
We are glad we did!

Re: Anyone's baby have a tongue tie?
DS is slightly tongue tied. 2 LC's told me it could be a reason why he had so much trouble latching but 2 pediatricians seem to think it's not that bad. He can protrude his tongue past his lower gums so I think thats why they havent sent me for an ENT consult. How far can your baby protrude her tonuge?

Re: Anyone's baby have a tongue tie?
We had DS's tongue snipped at 2 months. I was dreading the procedure and made myself absolutely sick about it... all for nothing! It was over in seconds... DS cried for a few minutes, it bled a tiny bit but the bleeding completely stopped by the time we walked out of the dr's office. He was totally fine eating and playing that same day.

Re: Anyone's baby have a tongue tie?
DS #1 had this. He was clipped when he was a little over 2 months old (it was actually Christmas Eve). He was totally fine! He cried for not even a minute and then slept for a few hours. It will be ok!

Re: Anyone's baby have a tongue tie?
DS had a it a little. The lactation consulatant and my ped (also a LC) thought maybe this was why he had trouble BF. We had it clipped a little (maybe he was a few weeks old?) by the ped in the office. I was really nervous and made DH hold him. He screamed for a few seconds then they put him to my breast and he was fine. I felt so bad though.
However, it didn't help with the BF.

Re: Anyone's baby have a tongue tie?
DS is tongue tied, and since he would have had to have been put under to have it clipped (he was an older baby when we discovered it) I declined.
I figured, god forbid he had a reaction to the anesthesia and something happened to him, it was all bc of something superficial (since he was eating just fine) that he was harmed.
So far it has not affected his speech either, which the ENT had said that he didnt think it would.
So the only issues the ENT thought DS would have was getting peanut butter off the roof of his mouth, playing a wind instrument, or kissing girls.
I figured when the time comes for him to kiss girls, if its an issue for him, we will cross that bridge when we come to it.

Same here. The LC in the hospital where I delivered noticed it when helping me BF. The ENT (Dr. Modlin) took him in the back, did the procedure, and gave him back to me in the matter of 5-10 minutes. DS didn't even cry.

Re: Anyone's baby have a tongue tie?
Thanks so much everyone!!!!
The pediatrician said that she was surprised that DD could breastfeed at all because the tongue tie is not minimal, in her words. Now that I think about it, Emilia has never been able to breastfeed as well as her twin sister - but I never thought much of it because I was always supplementing with formula as well.
I'm not sure how far she can stick her tongue out. She doesnt have teeth yet (she's 4 months) and I know she can't stick it out of her mouth. She can stick it right up to her lips, I think.
We have an appt today with an ENT. It turns out DH had a tongue tie and they never did anything. He had speech therapy as a child because of it and there are still words he cant really say. . . only a few, but still. It hasnt affected his life, but he said he hated his lisp and pronunciation problems, so hopefully we can get this done today.
I think it will be harder on me than on my little one. . . but all of your posts made me feel so much better!

Re: Anyone's baby have a tongue tie?
DS was tongue-tied. The only problem he had at first was not being able to latch when BF'ing.
We got it snipped at 6 months. No big deal.
Later on though he did have mobility issues with his tongue.

Re: Anyone's baby have a tongue tie?
My son was tongue tied, he couldn't latch. We had it clipped at about 4 months, and now at almost 5 he does have some speech issues that his speech therapist thinks could or could not be caused by this.

DD had a slight tongue tie, according to the lactation consultant, and had a hard time latching....I never got hers clipped. She did ok BFing for awhile, but then I pumped.

Re: Anyone's baby have a tongue tie?
DS #1 was tongue tied - the dr said it was moderate. We went to a few different ENT who refused to clip it saying it would probably correct itself. i had heard that it might cause delayed speech/lisps and i wanted to BF and he could not latch on so i researched and found a Dr on LI that specialized in clipping tongue ties. We had it corrected when DS was 2 weeks old. I left the room during the actual procedure bc i couldnt bear to watch, but i remember it only taking seconds - i couldnt believe how fast/easy it was. DS cried for less than a minute. After about 10 minutes she asked me to try BFing and he latched on w/o any issues - it was amazing.
That Dr had told us that if the baby is tongue tied, chances are one of the parents is too. Turns out my DH has a slight tongue tie, but never knew it.

Re: Anyone's baby have a tongue tie?
DS #2 is tongue-tied but our ped is not concerned because it's not impeding any of his development (yet).
Nursing, eating, communicating --- his development is moving along as if he has no tongue-tie.

Re: Anyone's baby have a tongue tie?
My DD had hers done in the hospital when she had tubes put in.
She was around 10-11 months. While it wasn't effecting her BFing or eating, we figured since she had to be under anyway, mind as well get it done.
I probably would've still done it in the office regardless. She was a late talker and we think that had something to do with it? We'll never really know....
