Treat in lunch box or not?

First time here, should I be putting a small treat like a cookie in my DD's lunch box or not? Just wondering if she will be the only one with or without a treat?

Re: Treat in lunch box or not?

I always put a small treat in the lunchbox. Cookies, or a fruit snack, something sweet. I also put in fruit and a sandwich.

9 times out of 10, something comes home with them anyway.

Re: Treat in lunch box or not?

I sent Emily this morning with a sandwich, string cheese, 2 hard boiled egg whites and yogurt raisins.

I guess the yogurt raisins are her "treat."

Some days she will eat the sandwich, somedays she will not. She loves hard boiled egg whites and string cheese so they are my guarentee that she'll at least get some protien in.

In my experience the kids do all pretty much have a lot of treats in their lunches. At least according to Emily. She says everyone gets oreos, chips, etc and she wants to know why I don't send her with them. My rule is that she can have an oreo or two AFTER school after a big bowl of fruit or a whole apple.

Re: Treat in lunch box or not?

Since my kids have always had snack in school, I send a sandwich (or soup, etc.), dessert, snack and drink.

I plan on putting a small treat in there - 2 cookies, fruit snacks, something like that.

I want to. My mom always did but it's not allowed in her school. I agree with healthy eating but 2 cookies never hurt anyone. Chat Icon

Re: Treat in lunch box or not?

I gave money for ice cream today. It was a special day! He had a sandwich, carrot-applesauce, and chips for lunch today. Tomorrow he'll have a sandwich, cucumbers, and maybe some chips. I have to send a snack too, so he'll probably get a string cheese and apples for snack. I do not think a small treat every day is a bad thing as long as you balance it with healthier things.

Re: Treat in lunch box or not?

When my kids bring lunch to school I always include a 100 calorie pack of cookies or chips.

For their in class snack it's always fruit. Once in a while I throw in a Hershey's Kiss, just as a reminder that Mommy loves them!Chat Icon

Re: Treat in lunch box or not?

We do Red/Yellow/Green light snacks.

When they take lunch to school they get a green light snack - fruit, cheese, veggies, whole grain crackers with hummus - for 4 days.

The next 2 days they bring they can opt for a yellow light snack - goldfish crackers, fig newtons, dried fruit jerky, fruit cocktail

Then - on the 7th day that they bring (consecutively or broken up during the month) - they can choose a red light snack like cookies, brownies or whatever.

Of course all bets are off when they buy lunch because the school has some pretty red light choices for drinks and snacks!!
