a little concerned...what should i do
so dd was in a 10:1:2 last year integrated. at her transitional meeting the chairperson recommended a 12:1:1 with opportunities for mainstream over integrated K because integrated K could have 25 kids in it. she has a lot of anxiety issues and adhd.
well, fast forward to yesterday's K orientation and I find out she is in an 8:1:1. I am concerned and a little bit upset. we were assured that this was going to be a systematic step into her being included with her peers. but now she is in a class of less kids than last year. i am not sure what to do: wait and see for a few weeks, or call the chairperson or school psychologist asap? i don't want to be "that parent" but i know my kid and if she gets comfortable into a routine, to change it on her will be difficult. plus, i really think she can rise to the occasion being with a bigger group given her experience over the summer at camp.
anyone willing to give me some advice? bad enough she is my first and it's the first day of K. i don't want to have to worry about this too...

Definitely call to find out. They cant put her in a more restrictive setting without your knowledge and signed consent.

Exactly.
Also they should have written down what they are mainstreaming your child for and how long. It should all be on your IEP.
I am almost in the same position as you. My DD was in a 12:1:1 in pre-k and during our transition meeting they all wanted to put her into the 8:1:1. Mostly because she has super high anxiety and because of that becomes a selective mute. She will not speak at school at all (but doesn't shut up at home lol). So i kind of agreed with them after talking it through for like an hour. We also have another meeting set up in November to check her progress and to see if we can move her out of the class. One of my concerns was academics and socialization so because congnatively she scored off the charts (i'm exaggerating a bit lol), they are mainstreaming her into gen ed for an hour academic block and for all specials, art, gym, music, lunch. An assistant will go with her though. All of that is written in her IEP that I signed off on. The exact amount of time for each activity.
So long story short, contact the CSE chair and find out why they switched her without your knowledge.

I think the biggest problem with any child is "change". Noone wants to go from one class to another, after getting to know a "routine". I taught kindergarten, and one year we had well over 30 kids in a class (this was nyc), they decided in like October, to create a new class. They took from every class a few kids to create a "new class' it was a disaster for those kids who had to "move". It's completely unfair.
If you feel strongly about the larger class size, do not hesitate to make it clear about what you would like, and that the change should be done asap.
I completely agree with the PP, how could they do it without permission ?
Also never be afraid of being "that parent" when it comes to administration. Make sure they know how well you know your child, they could only respect that. Schools are disorganized and impersonal. It takes the parents to make sure things fall into place and personalized.
ETA, I would get in touch with the chairperson, and perhaps even the principal.

I would call immediately!!! That's an inappropriate setting as per your IEP and they are out of compliance. Why on earth would they go from a 12 to an 8. That's a big difference and I wouldn't want your dd to have to deal with switching classes/teachers/friends.

It could very well be that they didn't have 12 kids for the class. Did you ask if this was the case? My child has been in various ratios, but the class has never been maxed out i.e. 12:1:1, 15:1:1, etc.

Does her CSE mention the ratio?
If so they can't change that without your knowledge and your approval? Especially if they changed from the class she was supposed to be in.
They can change teacher, etc... but not that!
I would call.
The SD won't do a thing. They don't interfere with the school you pick and the program you pick.

I was going to say this--perhaps the enrollment is low right now?

ok i spoke with a few people and yes, she is in the right class. it is a 12;1:1 but there are not enough kids enrolled to have a full class. after speaking with her teacher and school psychologist i feel much better. thanks for all of the help!
