infants in winter

DD was born in March so we had one of those carseat covers that kept her warm during outings while she was a newborn. I feel like that just won't cut it for a 6-12 month old. But everywhere I look, I can only find infant sweaters. All of the winter coats are for 12 months and up.

So what is an infant supposed to do while outside during colder days? Just always wear a snowsuit? That seems silly since her time outside would probably consist mostly of walking to & from the car (she's too little to play in the snow, kwim?).

Or am I just not looking in the right places? I checked target, macys, walmart, & old navy and had no luck. Very cute jackets and sweaters, but no COATS Chat Icon

help!

thank you! I didn't even think about that place. I just looked and they do have coats for under 12 months. Awesome!

Re: infants in winter

Thank you for asking this. I have been wondering the same thing too and have been having the same issue. DD was almost a year old her first winter so I got her a coat. DS will only be 7 months. Thanks to PP for their suggestions.

Re: infants in winter

I don't like snow suits for carseats, infant or otherwise. Last year, I found a fleece full body suit from Columbia online at Nordstroms. I did find it difficult to find larger than 9 months. This was the only one I found, and it went up to size 24 months. If your DS wasn't a girl, I would give it to you! I think Land's End sells the fleeces too. I don't put anything heavier than a fleece on my kids when they are going into the car seat.
eta: I actually thought you were looking for larger sizes. You should be able to find nice fleece full body suits for your LO! Check Century 21, Kohls, Carters.

Re: infants in winter

I had a cute one-piece fleece for L last winter. I liked it b/c it wasn't too thick, but still warm. What size is JJ in now?

that's cute. she's wearing 6 month clothes now, but I would need something that she'll be able to wear all thoughout winter, until at least February when she's 11 months old. That's what makes it difficult. She's so tall as is so I'm kinda thinking that I'll probably be better off with a coat rather than a one-piece. Plus I don't plan for her to spend a lot of time outside during the colder months. Just during errands, ya know? But we have COLD winters where we are so I don't think a jacket will suffice.

Re: infants in winter

I've always gotten fleece jackets for my kids since they can't wear puffy coats in the car seat anyway. You're really just going in and out of the car with a baby, they don't need to be that bundled up, KWIM? The snowsuit is good if you're going to be outside for longer amounts of time, like playing in the snow or something, but honestly, you don't really do that with a small baby anyway.
Put on the fleece coat, you don't have to worry about taking it off in the car, and then if its really cold, throw a blanket in the stroller or shopping cart, or whatever. 8.7547

Gap Warmest winter jacket would be perfect. The size of the coats we got last year was 6 - 12mo so that should get her through the winter.

ITA! You really cant have a big jacket on them anyway in the car seat - we used the fleece jackets and blankets!

Carters, Macys, and I've seen North Face fleece on Amazon.com. I'm sure there are others, too.

Re: infants in winter

right now my DD is 7 months...yesterday i bought the 3-1 jacket from childrens place and also just a plain cream colored coat from there too...i bought 12m size in both...and to be perfectly honest i put them on her and they just look very uncomfortable. the sleeves are too long, the 3-1 is very rigid and will probably be really uncomfortable in the carseat.

i'm now leaning towards using the bundle me again with a fleece or something

Re: infants in winter

For the poster who asked: Thin fleece is the best bet for carseats. Nothing thick and bulky. Layers are good, you can always take the coat off in the carseat and give them a blanket if it's chilly. DD1 does this because her coat just causes more bulk than I am comfy with even though it's thin. You can also take a coat and put it on backwards or open the front zipper, pull the sides through the harness with the arms and zip the jacket over the harness. Good way to check for thickness being acceptable is to put the child in the seat with the coat on, do up the harness and tighten it. Take the child out without loosening the harness , take coat off put kid back in and do the harness back up. See how much, if any slack there is. Slack tells you the coat's too thick.

For the OP, we have 2 Hanna Andersson fleece that we love. The first is the best baby jacket the other is the nordic fleece snowsuit. Both are made of nice, warm fleece and both are made to last longer, they have arms and legs that can be rolled up and then down as baby grows. We got 2 seasons out of the jacket for DD1, 3 seasons out of the snowsuit for DD1 and are using both for DD2 this year. They still look brand new too.

Re: infants in winter

stupid question, when do i stop using the bundle me? DD is 6 months as well and we were going to put this back in the seat for winter....seems easier/warmer than a jacket?

Re: infants in winter

As a technician, I will say that you never use the bundle me in a car seat. After market accessories are not tested with the seat, interfere with the harness, can reroute the harness, can add unintentional slack, can compress in a crash. If you would like to use a bunting type cover, there are shower cap style covers that can be used that provide the same type of warmth without the danger of having added material behind the baby.

As a tech, the standard answer is they are untested and we don't know HOW they will perform in a crash. I know that they claim they are tested, but there is no standard to test to for aftermarket products so we can't be sure how they tested it. Did they test it with every seat at every harness position or did they throw it against a wall and claim it's been tested? And yes, they could perform just fine or they could cause the seat to fail miserably, even in a relatively minor crash. No one knows. Personally, as a mom, I choose not to find out with my child.

I can tell you of at least one seat in recent memory that was recalled for 1/4" of additional fabric. If you look at a ruler, you'll see that isn't a lot of room for error with a seat.

I know there's a lot of controversy here about them, and that is fine, I'm not looking to debate or argue it. I am giving the facts about them, and what we DO know, it's up to you to ultimately decide whether or not to use it.

All that said, I loved my bundle me in the stroller.

I'm thinking something like this:

or

size 6-9 month

You think this is too bulky for her carseat? I'm a little afraid of doing too small a coat since the winters are pretty cold where we are. Chat Icon
