Do you stay in the room....
with your DC during speech or occupational therapy? DS just started last week and I have stayed in the room with him for the first few therapy sessions. The therapist said it was up to me if I wanted to stay. I said as long as it isn't distracting to DS, then I would like to stay. So far he is oblivious to me being in there. I sit on the couch and his back is to me.. He will be 23 months old on the 24th. He can be shy at times..

When my DS first started speech (21 months), I stayed in the room with him. It was fine initially, then he started to go to me (usually when she was trying to get him to work)! So then I moved up to our office, which is behind the living room so I could hear everything they were saying, and I had some idea of what she was doing with him each week. It was useful, and gave me good ideas of what to do at home.

Only the first session then I would leave. I guess it depends on the child, if he's comfortable I'd go in another room. You may be amazed what he does different when your not watching.

Do what is best for your child and yourself. Stay if you feel like you are going to learn things from the session or that the therapist will learn about your child from you. In fact, in the beginning, you should probably stay as often as you could, so you could also help guide a session. (point out certain interests or behaviors your child does..ex...uses a strong eye gaze to communicate, a therapist may miss something subtle like that).
Also, use that time to regroup if you need to. You can get something done that you don't always have the ability to do.

Thank you everyone.. For now I think I will stay in the room but out of his sight.. I want to pick up what I can so I can try and help DS.. If it becomes a distraction to me, then I will go into a different room...

no...it is too much of a distraction for my son. If I stayed in there, I would find myself talking more to the therapist, and find that to be a disservice to my son.

i stayed with DS the 1st session with each therapist. he had about 10 therapists each week. he was 15 months when he started.
i would always listen though... if they ever needed me all they needed to do was call.
at 4 years old he still has 3 therapists (same ones) and i sometimes sit in just because my DD is more active and another adult is needed for certain games.
i was always told its up to the parents but the child works better when the parent isnt around, which is why when you go to a center they dont like you in the room.

I did in the beginning but found that DS was using me as a crutch when he didn't want to do whatever the therapist was asking. After I stopped sitting in he did much better.

The therapists are still asking a lot of questions and the speech therapist is also signing with DS. I can sit out of sight of DS and still see the ST to pick up the signing. He is sitting in his high chair with his back to me... I will probably move to the dining room when OT comes..He has only had a few sessions..

This is what I did. When he got services at home, I was usually within earshot in another room, so I could hear what they were working on and how he was doing. Most of our therapists encouraged this because they could get DS to do much more when I was not there.

I did the first session, but after that went into another room and just listened. He would come to me if I was in there. He definitely did a lot of work for her when I wasn't in his sight.

If there is a huge distraction, I walk to the next room and "Peek In", but, that hasn't happened in a while.

For speech yesterday, I tried to stay out of the room. DS is fine with me being in or out. The therapist still has questions for me. DS has major feeding issues and she needs to know as much as I can tell her. At the end of the session, she showed me the signs she used. I didn't like walking in and out of the room..It didn't bother them..

I am a special instructor and I usually prefer parents to stay in the room. Honestly, I am there only a few hours or so a week - it is really the parents job to carry over anything I do - otherwise the sessions are ineffective! With some kids, it is a distraction, so I would just position the child so that their back is towards the parent. However, if a parent has something to do, I wouldn't have a problem with that either. Also, EI does PREFER that parents are present!
