Re: Is it "normal" for a 22 month old to know the alphabet?

Just because it's "memorized" doesn't take away from the child's accomplishment, IMO! Regardless, it's an important skill for kids to have. Is it advanced? Who knows. But, props to the kid.
ETA: The ability to memorize is a skill in itself! So I wouldn't brush it aside as insignificant. agree.

DS is 22 months and can identify all the numbers from 1 to 10 out of order and the letters about 75% of the time... I don't necessarily think he's advanced, he's just been exposed to it repeatedly at day care and I think he's just picked up on it.

At 18 months my friend's daughter could recognize and name most letters and most numbers between 1 and 10...she could also recognize and name a decent amount of colors.
So yeah...being able to sing the alphabet at that age is definitely possible

DD is 21 months and knows 20 letters of the alphabet. She picks them out all over the place. I don't think this is necessarily the norm, but I also don't think she is advanced....she is just interested in letters

My DD is 22 months old and can sing the alphabet. She doesn't know the letters though. She can sing others songs as well....she has a good memory and vocabulary.

My son knew the alphabet by the age of 2, and he can recognize all the letters both upper and lower case. I wouldn't call him advanced for that. He turned 2 in September and can sing the alphabet song, and sight read a bunch of words. His favorite thing is letters.

DD has been singing the alphabet for months. She is 23 months. She also can point out about 7 letters. Sounds right on schedule to me.

not normal in my house.
I don't think he sang any songs at that point.
At 4, I still don't think he gets the concept of sounds and putting them together to read.
But he is good looking and a really nice kid, so I just don't care anymore

My 27 month old isn't close to knowing the alphabet and doesn't really recognize letters yet. I'm not worried at all. He can count to 10, and most of the time the numbers are in the correct order Good enough for me!!

Re: Is it "normal" for a 22 month old to know the alphabet?
DD is 22 months and loves the alphabet and knows pretty much all her letters. She can sing the song but only because she has it memorized and does leave out letters. I really made no effort to teach it to her at all, I think she just happens to like it. But I don't think it makes her a prodigy or anything.

Re: Is it "normal" for a 22 month old to know the alphabet?
Abby has been singing the song for months now. She has also been able to count to 20 for a while and can count backwards from 10.
HOWEVER it is a rote skill. She does recognize and can name numerals 0-9 and a few letters. Memorizing a song is a skill but memorizing the ABC song is NOT knowing the ABCs. Id never claim she did.

Re: Is it "normal" for a 22 month old to know the alphabet?
There is a huge range of normal. Pleas ekeep in mind that a lot of people who post on threads like this have little "baby Einstein" type children... they want to brag about their child's advanced achievement. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it gives a skewed view of what's normal.
DS- Probably knew the alphabet at 2ish. He was great with that kind of stuff, a very early reader also. Not typical.
DD1- is now 4, and barely knows her letters and numbers. She certainly doesn't grasp the concept that certain letters make certain sounds, and when you put the sounds together they make a word.
DD2- 20 months old. She says mama, dada, dog, and maybe 2 other words. She dances to Fresh beat Band. She has no clue about the alphabet.

My friend's son can sing the alphabet...I was surprised! My DD is almost 18 months and no way close to that...which is fine, I just was wondering if that was normal or kind of "advanced" for that age. TIA!
I think I read someone where that kids who watch a lot of tv can recite the alphabet and numbers quicker than toddlers who do not, because prechool aged programs teach those types of skills. However, the other children will quickly catch up. I don't know if your friend's son watches a lot of tv or not. You question just made me remember that article.

Loved your post...I think sometimes moms (myself included) can get caught up in "is my kid doing that?" and then freaking out that they are behind if not. My four year old isn't so strong in his alphabet he doesn't find letters and numbers all that interesting but he's made progress in his recognition and sound correspondence. He'd rather be swinging a bat or throwing a ball or chasing his cousins b/c that's where his interests lie for now....and that's ok... he'll get there.

These are way more important skills and will get him a lot farther in life anyway, so there (I'm dead serious).

Umm I think it is a memorization thing honestly.
DD has been able to sing the alphabet since about 15-16 months (she would leave letters out but knew most of them), butttt we sing it all the time so she just copied it. She desnt get what the individual letters mean or anything at all.
I agree we sing it all the time and Riley just sings along!!

Re: Is it "normal" for a 22 month old to know the alphabet?
My granddaughter Jaci is 28 months and she recognizes all of the letters. She can count to 20 and backwards from 10. Her vocabulary is expanding a lot and she is learning two languages. So, yes, I think is posssible. My daughter is trying to teach her the alphabet backwards, I told her good luck with that!

Every kid is different - Sean was singing the ABC's (he calls it "ABCD") at about 16 months ........
He doesn't really recognize the letters (with the exception of A) - but he sings the whole song .........

I know that this is an old post but I was going through some of it and I came across this one and I was disturbed about some of the comments about 22/23 month old children who don't know their alphabet and only can memorize!! My son at 22 months old knew his letters and in fact I never even bothered teaching him the ABC SONG I just went straight to teaching him the letters. I posted two Videos on YouTube so you can see for your self! Every child is different but it is possible!!!

Re: Is it "normal" for a 22 month old to know the alphabet?
hmm old topic?
DS is 19m and can sing parts of the alphabet song, like "abcd hij lmno wxyz" he also "sings" itsy bitsy spider and twinkle little star he can count to 15, but i think he only understands up to 3. He can point out some letters. He can recognize the word baby and cat, and I think dog, but I'm not sure.
he can't make the f, th, r, l, w, and a bunch of other sounds, so its pretty funny to hear it.
I think you can teach them anything if you really want to though. So I wouldn't say its advanced at all. Not even the memorization impresses me, I think all toddlers this age are genius and learn to know what they think they need to know or what they need to do to impress their parents and especially the grandparents. My mom goes ballistic when he does anything, wow does he put on a show for her!

I don't see a difference between what you're saying and what they are saying though. It's all in the definition of what it is to "know".
Identifying the 26 letters IMO is no different than identifying 26 different characters such as Elmo and Dora. I don't think anyone is saying it is not "possible" for a 22 month old to "know the alphabet' as you mention- but that there is a difference between recognizing/identifying letters and actually understanding each one and how they work together to form different sounds and then words/ sentences. Kwim?
If you ARE saying that at 22 months your dc REALLY GETS the meaning and use behind letters and sounds in a substantive way MORE than identification of them then you should be very proud b/c imho that IS advanced.
At 20 months my son will repeat about 1/2 the alphabet and identify on A-G on paper BUT it's just memorization and recognition as I explained earlier (same with his numbers 1-10). To me it is really no different than when Kai Lan comes on and he starts blurting out Ho-Ho, Rintu, Tolley, and his fav to say "YAAAAAAYA" lol.
That is also my personal opinion on the whole "Your Baby Can Read System"- it's just character/ picture recognition. Not to say that learning different words (especially ones that are easily interchanged like dog, hog, and log) doesn't help them to REALLY learn reading down the line.

Re: Is it "normal" for a 22 month old to know the alphabet?
Old post! DS is 31 months old and sings the alphabet song all the time. He can also look at a key board or book and reconize most letters. He can also count to 10. He has been doing all this since about 27-28 months, which I would say is probably normal.
At 22 months he wasn't doing any of this. He wasn't even talking that much. I was actually worried something was wrong. Then 24 months hit and it was a word explosion, and he started singing songs and gradually learning more and more.
Every child is different. My one neice was talking in sentences at 15-18 months. People where shocked to see how good she talked, but she is not the norm.
