dogs visiiting house with 3 cats
I am a little concerned about our visitor situation for the holidays. My parents are coming xmas eve and sleeping over. They are bringing their 3 dogs (2 pugs and a lab. The pugs were mine many years ago. One got very sick and needed 24 hour care for a long period, which I could not provide because of work, so my parents took them.) My parents' friends are also coming and sleeping over, and I just found out they are bringing their dog, too. I don't know exactly what kind, but one of those white, fluffy dogs. The white dog and the lab bark A LOT. I have 3 cats. 2 kittens and their mom. They are still skiddish around anyone but me (they are rescues.) The lab barks like crazy at any cat it sees. I'm hoping my cats will stay upstairs and baby gates will keep the dogs downstairs, but I have to say, I am nervous about this and would like some advice. How should I handle? What precautions should I take? I really don't want to terrorize my cats because they are finally warming up and getting relaxed--especially the male kitty who now loooooves me and sleeps on my bed sometimes. Any advice is really appreciated here.
ps--my dad was expressing concern about taking care of the dogs in my house, so I said why dont you leave them for the night and ask the neighbor across the street (teenage girl who also has dogs and the family is very friendly with ours) to let them out in the yard a few times and feed them. He immediately said no, that's out of the question. I'm not leaving them.
i am going to have a FULL house--in addition to me, my DH, our 2 kids, and our 3 cats, we are going to have 7 adults and 4 dogs. All sleeping over. And one of the adults is my mom's sister, who has severe down syndrome and severe alzheimer's, gets lost, angry, and has no bowel/bladder control anymore.

um 4 dogs, your parents and your parents friends? why did you agree to this??!! how long are they staying for? just the night? if i bring my dog to my parents house they put the cats upstairs in a bedroom-just because the cat and dog will play fight. the dog also is only allowed in certain areas or weather permitting we keep her outside.
seems like this is going to be a lot for you. is there any way you can talk to your mom about the dog situation since it seems like your dad wont budge? good luck

i agreed in the christmas spirit. my parents and my aunts are close family. i dont want people drinking and driving, and i thought they would truly enjoy waking up with my kids on christmas morning and seeing the excitement that you can only feel if you wake up together xmas morning.
my mom's friends were xmas staples at our house growing up. except for the past 2-3 years, they were there every single christmas, so when my mom asked if they could come, i said of course. they had nowhere else to go, and i feel bad for people alone on the holidays. i wasn't asked about their dog.
as for my parents' dogs--i wasn't really asked--just kind of told. i feel i can't say no because the 2 pugs were mine once upon a time. they basically saved the one pug's life because i couldn't be there to give her the care she needed when she was sick. so, how would i now turn around and say that can't even visit my house for one night? the lab is the dog i rescued when i lived with them many many years ago. she's old now and they dont want to leave her alone. they never ever leave them alone even for a night. that's just who they are.
i'm going to move another litter box or two upstairs. I have all but one on the bottom floor right now. I'll move their food upstairs as well. I just really really really don't want the kitties terrorized because I've worked so hard to make them comfortable.
