NYC Half Marathon
Anyone else doing this? I entered the lottery with a friend. I got in she didn't and I'm terrified! I have a couple of 5k and 5k obstacle courses under my belt and average 15-20 miles a week. I am following Jeff Galloway's training plan. He suggests using run-walk-run to avoid injury and fatigue for beginners. Anyone have any experience with this? Is it okay to walk during a half marathon? Any words of advice are welcome!

No words of advice - just a good luck!! I am training for and running my 1st half marathon in May. Hopefully the many runners on here will have good advice!

Re: NYC Half Marathon
Congrats on getting in! This is my second year in a row applying and getting denied, booooo!
I followed Hal Hidgeon's plan for a half and for a full, and really feel the plans work. I had a base of 5-6 miles when I started training for my first half. I got up to 10 miles 3 weeks before and then rested due to a minor injury (just did elliptical). But I was fine for the race and ran the whole thing. It's definitely ok to walk during a half. I see a lot of running groups doing run/walk intervals during races. So if that is what you feel comfortable training with, then stick with it. Good luck, there's nothing like NYC races!

that's awesome, good luck! What time do you need in order to qualify? I know it differs by age, but just curious.

Re: NYC Half Marathon
I believe they changed it to 1:27 minutes. That means I have to seriously speed up my times from the past but I want the NYC marathon spot so badly I think I may do it!!!

Re: NYC Half Marathon
Yeah! You'll do great! There is a 3 hour time limit, so make sure you train to do ~13 min/mile!
I was denied this year too for the second time :( I'm so mad b/c I had a guaranteed entry the first year they moved it to March, but I had signed up for a marathon in Atlanta the same day - I should have done the HM - no lottery for Atlanta! But I didn't know that it was going to go lottery, they never had to when it was in August.
lilqt - you have one more year at 1:37. Good Luck!

Re: NYC Half Marathon
It's totally fine to walk during a half. Just move as far to the right as you can. I used run/walk to do the half marathon in Philly in November. I finished the 13.1 with zero pain and plenty of energy to walk another mile back to our hotel. LOVE Galloway!
Good luck!

Re: NYC Half Marathon
Just wanted to say that I did this half twice and its such a fun race. When else can you run down time square!! The first half is harder then second half... once you leave Central park I think the race gets easier. There is also a ton of entertainment once you are on the streets! You will do great... and remember to have fun!

Re: NYC Half Marathon
Thank you all for the encouragement! I'm sorry to hear about some of you not making it in. I honestly thought I had no chance when I put my estimated finish time at 3hrs. I also didn't realize there was a time limit. Good to know. I did my first 4 mile run and averaged a 10 min mile. Not horrible, but hoping it gets better!!

Re: NYC Half Marathon
My wife and I are doing the Half and Full this year. The Galloway method is great, just plan it out, eat healthy and get enough rest and you will do awesome.
Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions about running!
