Am I crazy for even considering this?
DH's family lives in Florida and since we now have DD we will be going to Florida every year to see his family.
Last year we went when DD was 4 months old and we used points to pay for the flight and rental car. The only thing we had to pay for was the hotel.
Well, this year we don't have enough points to pay for anything so everything will be out of pocket and I am estimating the flights, car rental and hotel to cost us about $2000 Staying with his family is not an option (don't even get me started on this!)
So I was thinking about driving down. DD will be 15 months old. We just got a new SUV so the only expense we will have is the gas/tolls/food. I would drive straight through and leave at night so hopefully DD will sleep during the bulk of the drive.
Am I crazy to even consider this?!?!?
I truly think that it would only cost us no more than $500 to drive down. That plus the cost of the hotel will save us around $1000 for this trip (that we will have to make every year )

Not crazy at all! We just took the twins to North carolina..about an 11 hour drive and they were amazing (almost 1 year old).
I highly recommend lots of snacks and a DVD player!

Re: Am I crazy for even considering this?
Personally I would not. That is too long for ME to be in the car, never mind the kids! We flew to FL and it went so quickly
Dh wants to drive to outer banks this summer, not feeling that!

Re: Am I crazy for even considering this?
He have been driving to VA (Norfolk) a few times a year since DS and DD was an infant (he is now almost 5). It is about 7-8 hr drive. And I think that is hard!!!!!!! Your DC is still young enough to be a lap child, have you looked at SouthWest or Jet Blue?? My Stepson flies from Florida a few times a year to NY and I am able to find flights around $99-149 each way (to West Palm and Orlando). And using discount website found rental car for $20/day for fullsize car.
Good luck!! I know it is hard anyway you look at it, but you will make the right decision based on your family.

We drove to straight through to Florida with Ava when she was 5 months old. She slept most of the time. We took breaks got her out to stretch change diaper and feed her and she did great. We left at 3:00am and go to Florida at 1 or 2:00am. It was very tiring but me and DH took turns driving. We did stay overnight on the way back up though as a last minute idea and spur of the moment we decided lets do another day in Washington DC. It was such a fun trip.

Can't go by me- my 18 month old DD can't go more than 20 min in the car without a total meltdown!
If your DD is good in the car though- it may not be so bad

I went through AmericanExpress Travel to find it. But have had success with priceline also.

I always get good deals for the car. Checkout Hotwire, Costco Travel, or wait for last minute deals on Alamo.

Re: Am I crazy for even considering this?
we just made the drive to florida in november with a 3.5 year old, and 16 month old twins. My twins are normally not good in the car, but the drive to florida went much better than I expected. We left 9:30pm Thanksgiving night and drove through the night. When the kids woke up we were already halfway there in NC. We stopped for breakfast, got back on the road until lunch and then stopped, got back on the road until dinner, and we arrived at 9:30 pm. 24 hours door to door including all the stops.
