Nap/Sleep schedule help

My DD is 3.5 months old and EBF.

Her sleeping at night was great the week of Christmas (my gift :) ) 6-8 hours. Normally, she will give me 4-5 hour stretch and then 2-3 hours.

This week has been rough getting up every hour or 2 hours. I think she might be teething.

The main issue is the lack of schedule. I think she sleeps too much in the day. She cat naps throughout the day..she doesn't just take two long naps.

I try to put her to bed early, but she will just wake up after 30 minutes or an hour. She doesn't really want to sleep a long stretch until 10 or later.

She has also been VERY WHINY lately. She whines before her naps and fusses and whines before bedtime. Could this be part of the teething issue?

I would just love to get her on some routine. Is she too young? Any tips? Should I just go with the flow and follow her lead? I am a SAHM until September, so I don't NEED the consistency, but it'd be nice. lol

Re: Nap/Sleep schedule help

She might be hitting a growth spurt. Is she showing any signs of teething? My DS is 14 weeks this week and he went through this a bit about a week or so ago. Now he is getting back to his routine a bit more. He can also be a cat napper during the day as well. When he's on normal schedule though he still sleeps at night, but like you, no sooner than 10pm.

Re: Nap/Sleep schedule help

She's drooling like CRAZY!!!!!! Biting on everything..the whining and screaming is also what made me think teething.

But you're right it could just be a growth spurt.

hahah oops I posted from my LIW name (the name I made here first but never used!)

Is she staying up too long between naps/sleeps? Maybe she's just overtired?

DD was never a good napper, so I can't help you there. Once she stopped napping whenever she was tired (e.g., falling asleep in my arms, the car seat, etc.), then I tried having her nap in the crib. She would only sleep for 30 minutes or so and she would cry/complain anywhere from 5-20 minutes. I stopped putting her down in the crib and she naps in the swing now. She naps for 1-2 hours in the swing and wakes up so happy. I'll worry about it later when she outgrows the swing!

It's probably a little too early for her to really be in pain from teething, but there's always that 1 kid who starts getting teeth super early, so you never know.

ETA:

What times does she wake up?

What time are her naps? Are you doing a little nap routine with her?

What time do you try and put her to sleep?

She only stays up usually 2 hours the most at a time. Sometimes less. As soon as I see her getting sleepy or if it's close to 2 hours, I rock her a little, sing to her and put her in her crib.

SHe wakes up 7-8, but then will only be up for like an hour and nap...sometimes she just eats and goes right back to sleep until 9-10.

Her naps are not a set time. Just when she seems tired and again usually 2 hours after she wakes. I wrote it down today:

up at 8am
9:15-11 nap

1-2 nap

4-430 nap

630-7 nap

930-1030 (she just woke up fussy..she ate and went right back to sleep..hopefully she sleeps a long stretch tonight)

Is she napping too much?? When she's tired, it's hard to keep her up...if she goes longer than 2 hours she gets overtired and fussy.

No nap routine really. Just rock and sing a little and put in the crib.

When I try to put her to bed earlier (7/8) she will just sleep a little and wake or fight it. She seems to like to go to bed 9/10

Its not too young for a schedule at all.

Dont wake a sleeping baby at night. DS had a set feeding schedule (ie every 2/3 hours) during the day. I woke DS up during the day for his feeds though.

DC may be going through a growth spurt, teething, gas, reflux, have days/nights confused...could be anything. I would try a schedule as well as a set bedtime routine. DS used to get changed and had a bedtime story with his last bottle (BM or formula). It worked.

I do all of that. I NEVER wake her at night. Rarely in the day, unless she went 4 hours with out eating.

I do a bedtime routine with her since she was a few weeks old. PJS/diaper change/ read a book/ swaddle/nurse...sing and rock if she doesn't fall asleep while nursing.

I dont knw how to get her on a schedule during the day though!

And she doesn't have her days/nights confused at all. She gives me the longest stretch at night. Usually 4-5, but it's not consistent. Some nights it will be 2-3

Re: Nap/Sleep schedule help

My dd is 4 months. She's been on a loose schedule since I stopped letting her nap on me and put her in her crib (awake) for naps. That was about 6 weeks ago.

Her day is like this, give or take a half hour:

Wake at 7:30
Nap 9-9:45
Nap 12:30-1:10
Nap 4:00-4:30
Sleep 7:30-4:30
Sleep 5-7:30

So that's 3 short naps, 2.5-3 hours apart. At night she usually has an 8 hour stretch and the a 3 hour stretch but that varies greatly. Last night it was 10.5 hours and then 1 more hour! That was nice. Chat Icon She gets about 13 hours of sleep a day total.

Re: Nap/Sleep schedule help

It's hard to have a feeding schedule with an EBF baby, but you can try to have a routine for everything else. Your DD's routine sounds perfectly normal. (I know you're probably main-lining coffee, but it does get better).

LOL It's just so inconsistent. Some days she will eat every 2 hours..some 3..some 4 and some nights she will give me long stretches, sometimes not at all! I feel like everyone else has a set schedule but me!

PLus, the whining is new. SHe whines before naps and bed. I don't know if it's a growth spurt, teething, or is she was a little sick because she had diarrhea Sunday/Monday.

Thanks
