Home to Hospital Distance...
Right now I am living out in Suffolk, near Patchogue.
My doctor is in Manhasset and I will be giving birth at North Shore Hospital.
I am starting to panic that I won't be able to get from to Patchogue to North Shore in time to have a nice, healthy delivery. I am starting to panic that I will have the baby in the car or something...
Do you think it will be fine, or is the hospital too far away?
I'm having such anxiety about this now.

Re: Home to Hospital Distance...
For me, that would be too far of a drive... Chances are you'll still have enough time, but if that baby is gung ho about coming out asap, then you're going to have a problem... Just curious, why wouldnt you want to deliver at stony brook? It's much closer and from what I hear, it's awesome! Im in Holbrook and thats where I'll be

Re: Home to Hospital Distance...
We happen to live in an area where there are a million hospitals but in most parts of the country, hospitals are far away. I don't know the exact timing for the drive, but that doesn't seem absurd to me. It's not like you live in Montauk and Patchogue is right off the LIE, right? You'll be fine.

I think you'll probably be fine. I went into labor at work in the Hamptons and was able to get to Huntington Hospital in time. It was a bit scary though!

Re: Home to Hospital Distance...
For me that would be too far. I live in Farmingdale and delivered at Good Sam. It is about a 15 min ride and when my water broke it seemed like the longest drive of my life. I knew I was in no danger of delivering on the way it was more of just a OMG I'm having this baby get me to the hospital so I'm comfortable kind of feeling.

I think you should be fine. I was in active labor for 13 hours with my DS.

Re: Home to Hospital Distance...
USUALLY a woman's first labor is on the longer side so you should be ok.
How long of a drive is that for you though?
I'm in Queens and my hospital is in Manhattan. With no traffic (haha, that's a joke) it would be like a 1/2 hour drive, but in reality it will be closer to an hour getting through midtown traffic. An hour is pretty far, but there is a hospital 5 mins from my house should there be an emergency. It wouldn't be ideal, but I do have that option.

Re: Home to Hospital Distance...
My hospital is about 30 minutes from my house and it wasn't a problem. I was induced and in labor for 13 hrs as well.
If the baby decides to come sooner, you can always deliver at a hospital closer to your home if you need to.

Re: Home to Hospital Distance...
I think everyones labor is different. I personally would not want to go that far just because I'd have anxiety up until the day my water broke thinking about what my labor/the ride would be like. I'm sure nothing terrible would happen on the way there - and it would'nt effect the babys health, you might just be really uncomfortable.

Re: Home to Hospital Distance...
if i were you, i would map out every hospital between patchogue and manhasset. that way, if you should feel like you're not going to make it you can get to the nearest one on your way.
i think you'll be fine, especially if it's your first. they say you should wait to go to the hospital until your contractions are 5 minutes apart, 1 minute in length, and that you're having them like that for 1 hour. maybe you can plan on leaving for the hospital before you get to that point, just to be on the safe side.

Re: Home to Hospital Distance...
I live in West Islip and will be delivering at Good Sam which is about 2.5 miles away. With DD I almost didn't make it there in time, DH went thru the red light at Higbie and Montauk. this time I will leave more time to get there...LOL.

Re: Home to Hospital Distance...
I live a couple towns over from you and am delivering at NUMC in East Meadow. It's 38 miles from home. Stonybrook, which is the only other hospital I would consider delivering at is 28 miles. Fortunately, real birth is not like we see on TV (except in very rare circumstances). I'm sure you'll have plenty of time to get to Manhasset....and you may even wish you stayed home longer. Don't fret. It will ALWAYS work out.

Re: Home to Hospital Distance...
My hospital is far from my home as well, but my Dr assured me that your first labor/birth is a lot longer than a 2nd or 3rd so there is PLENTY of time from when you first feel a contraction or even break your water to get to the hospital... Which is a good thing because of the distance but a scary thing cause how long are we talking?! LOL

Re: Home to Hospital Distance...
I delivered at NSUH as well and I live in Westchester. I made it in plenty of time, actually when I arrived at the hospital my contractions were 2-3 min apart, but they wouldn't admit me b/c I was only 1-2 cm dilated. So I walked around the hospital until I was ready.
You should be fine!!

If this is your frist delivery, you should be fine. Go as soon as contractions are 4-5 minutes apart.

Re: Home to Hospital Distance...
I'm in Amityville and delivering at Stony Brook. On a good day, it takes me 45 minutes to get there. This will be my second. I went to Stony Brook for college so I know all the ways to get there, like if there is traffic one way, I know 2 other ways or if it's a certain time of day, take a certain route.
I was concerned but talked to my midwife and she said it will be fine. There are 2 other hospitals on my way though so if worse came to worse then I would just go to one of those.

Re: Home to Hospital Distance...
I live in Westchester and will deliver in the city. Its about a 35 minute drive with no traffic. I work 10 blocks away from my hospital and if I were to go into labor at work I'd be screwed trying to get to a hospital by me so this made the most sense. As far as time goes I am sure you will be fine. That was one if the first questions I asked my Dr and said since its my first baby its likely not an issue. My stepmom lives in ronkonkoma and delivered all 3 of her babies at lenox hill so I am going to try not to worry about it too much!

Re: Home to Hospital Distance...
Obviously everyone has their own comfort levels, but IMO I think you'll be fine.
With my first I lived about 10 minutes from the hospital. But I labored at home for over 6 hours, until my contractions were between 3-5 minutes apart, and frankly wished I had a stayed home a little longer. I was in labor for 16.5 hours, with 3 hours of pushing, so that was 7 hours of when I was at the hospital in active labor. Obviously plenty of time to have gotten to the hospital.
While I think this is a little longer than average for a first time mom, my point is that most people have plenty plenty of time between first steady contractions and actually giving birth.
If you really are concerned leave when your contractions are a little farther apart, so you think you'll arrive at the hospital when your contractions are at the point when you when to be in the hospital. So lets say you want to be in the hospital when your contractions are 5 minutes apart, just leave when they are 7 minutes apart so you'll hopefully get there at your desired time. I now live about 35/40 minutes from the hospital, so that's my plan for #2.
I'm not going to lie, laboring in the car isn't fun, but being w/a doctor and at a hospital that you are comfortable w/ is extremely important.
